I chose to study here as I wanted to study and live in Cornwall. Luckily, Exeter’s Penryn Campus has opportunities to study important topics such as sustainable development and sustainable futures whilst being situated by the beautiful Cornish coast.
The University of Exeter is a unique place to study due to the quality of lecturers and their prominence in the field environmental science. The level of depth and variety that we are introduced to is great, and it is nice being taught by lecturers who are some of the foremost researchers in their field.
My biggest highlight so far has been conducting practical research as part of my core modules. It was really great testing and trying new techniques in the field, as it developed and prepared me for future research within and beyond academia. I have also enjoyed being able to forge my own path in terms of the modules I have chosen and the type of research that I have engaged with. I chose the Nature, Health and Wellbeing module at the Truro Campus and conducted a piece of research in collaboration with Plastic Free Penzance regarding the impact they made in their local community.
In our transdisciplinary research methods, we were tasked with conducting a mini research project. I decided to investigate how rebranding ‘unpopular’ fish species may be utilised to levy the burden on ‘the big five’ species of fish, which are over-fished and over-consumed. I completed a mixed-methods study that identified salient topics for consideration through interviews with experts in the field which were tested in a survey of fish consumers. I really enjoyed this topic because it was purely exploratory, and I learned a lot in the process.
Finally, I love living in Cornwall because of its scenery and surrounding coast. Plus the support at the Penryn Campus is exceptional. I have had to seek support from my tutor and welfare team regarding future assignments, and they have been very helpful and facilitated me reaching my potential.
