I followed the MSc in “Sustainable Energy, Technology and Management” at Brunel University and I graduated with “Distinction” in July 2007. I came to Brunel University for various reasons: Firstly, because the partnership between Brunel and my Engineering School in France allowed me to obtain a double-degree if I validated my Master degree. I chose Brunel because of its really strong reputation in the engineering field. I also wanted to study renewable energy technologies and Brunel was one of the pioneer universities in this field.
From my French engineering studies I had a strong technical and theoretical background, but I did not know how to apply these technical skills to solve practical problems, which are day-to-day tasks that are faced in a professional working life. My year at Brunel helped me to bridge this gap, as several lecturers had strong industrial backgrounds and they taught us how to use theory to solve practical problems. In addition to being very oriented towards a future professional life and Industry, Brunel gave me the opportunity to develop skills like team work, communications, presentations, skills that are often neglected in pure Engineering studies, but that are again fundamental to a successful professional life.
I carried out a dissertation on solar collectors, where I assessed the feasibility of using them in UK dwellings to supply both hot water and heating demands. Solar combi-systems are widely used in other European countries and I wanted to understand why its penetration in the UK residential market was so small. My dissertation was carried out in partnership with WSP Energy and Viridian Concept, as I wanted to write a useful piece of research. My tutor at WSP was a former student of Brunel University. Through this partnership I had the opportunity to test solar collectors in real world conditions and to utilise pieces of software which are widely used in consultancy companies.
In a few weeks I will start a new job as a consultant at Power Planning Associates in Guildford. In this role I will work on various aspects of the energy supply in developing countries: from energy distribution and transmission, energy sector regulation and policy, poverty alleviation and social impacts, to renewable energy technologies feasibility study and design. In sum, I would encourage students to join the MSc programme at Brunel as it teaches skills and knowledge in a field which is expanding very quickly everywhere in the world.
