Entry Requirements

2:2 (or above) UK Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification in an engineering, science or technology subject.

A non–related subject with good grades in core modules in Stress Analysis or Strength in Materials, Electronics, Material Processing and Manufacturing or Production Technology may be considered.

Manikandan Murugan

Manikandan found that the Structural Integrity MSc reinforced and validated the experience in industry he already had. It also offered a focus on more technical subjects which were useful in advancing his career. Because lecturers teach with both engineers and academics in mind, this sort of knowledge is high in academic quality, yet immediately relevant to those like Manikandan who already have industrial experience. He felt easily familiarised with specialised knowledge he would not necessarily have gained from continuing in his previous field of work, which helped him to further his career.

All the modules he undertook helped to aid his transition into industrial work in Asset Integrity Management. In particular, the Metallurgy and Metals; Stress Analysis and Plant Inspection; and Reliability Engineering modules were informative moving into his subsequent employment. They gave a valuable overview of the processes within energy sectors, and gave more specific insight into how different types of equipment work within different assets. These modules also provided an introduction to risk-based inspection and maintenance, particularly regarding aging degradation mechanisms in different materials.

Since graduating, Manikandan has secured employment with Syncrude Canada, working in Quality Assurance for their Technical Engineering Services.

Mohammad already had nine years of experience in the welding and inspection field, and Brunel’s Structural Integrity MSc was the ideal course to substantiate that knowledge. Whether your background is academic or industrial, NSIRC’s unique setup ensures that all research remains directly relevant to industry.

Mohammad cited many of the core modules; Stress Analysis and Plant Inspection; Codes of Practice with Principles and Application; Reliability Engineering; Fracture Mechanics and Fatigue Analysis; and Numerical Modelling of Solids and Structures as being extremely instructive. He said that ‘they give an insight into the reasons behind the rules for the design, inspection and repair of structures that are imposed by codes and standards, and how to apply them’.

Lecturers support you in developing both theoretical and practical knowledge. In this case, being able to understand the thinking behind codes and standards gave Mohammad a more grounded perception of why they affect design, inspection and repair, in turn preparing him to be able to flexibly apply them in any relevant situation.

This MSc doesn’t just teach you to understand and apply international codes and standards. It provides you with essential knowledge and strategies to treat assessments case-by-case, regardless of whether they are covered by standards or not. Mohammed highlighted this aspect of the programme as particularly advantageous: it prepared him to work independently and reliably.

After graduating in 2018, Mohammad has begun a PhD project on brazing of stainless steels and super alloys, funded by Brunel University London and TWI.
