Strategic Management in the Global Environment MSc

Course Description

Strategy is the cornerstone of every business. It provides the overall direction of the organisation and defines its relationship with both the internal and external environment.

This masters degree helps you appreciate the importance of strategy and the skills required to compete globally. You’ll develop a unique blend of skills, master analytical tools and techniques, and understand how to formulate and implement strategy in the global arena.

Our team of leading academics and business practitioners will show you how to link an organisation’s resources and capabilities with global opportunities, to secure sustainable performance.

You‘ll benefit from the Business School’s strong corporate links, with representatives from firms worldwide providing guest lectures, case studies and career tips. There’s also the option to work on a consultancy project with an existing business, or apply your critical thinking and analytical skills in a research dissertation related to your own interests.

Academic excellence

You will be taught by a team of internationally recognised academics and business practitioners in the areas of strategy, management, business analytics, international business and economics. Their teaching is informed by their world-leading research in these areas, giving you access to cutting-edge knowledge and insights into the latest trends.

Our teaching and research in international business is ranked 1st in the UK and 2nd in the world (Financial Times Masters in Management rankings, 2016).

Course content

You’ll gain a broad understanding of international business and strategy, with core modules designed to give you a good grounding in economics and international business theory. You’ll also improve your skills in quantitative analysis to gain confidence in handling and analysing data, and explore the ways in which large amounts of data are used in business analytics.

During core modules you'll explore approaches to strategic management and strategies for organisations planning to enter foreign markets. You’ll also gain an understanding of research methods in international business and management studies – taught by expert researchers – and develop your professional skills in a range of different scenarios.

Throughout the year you’ll also be able to pursue your own areas of interest with your choice of optional modules.

Your research skills and subject knowledge will come together in the independent project you take towards the end of the year. You can either research a topic of your choice to complete a dissertation, or work on a consultancy project where you offer advice to an existing business, either individually or as part of a group.
