Teaching and learning

Teaching takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises, learning packages and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your team skills through structured syndicate work and group assignments.

Teaching staff are primarily academics from the Business School with research and/or in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Specialist facilities

Our Business School Postgraduate Centre at Wheatley Campus has a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, well equipped seminar rooms and a postgraduate lounge and private study area.

The Wheatley Campus library provides specialist business resources including 1,000 sets of UK and overseas companies' annual reports, statistics on all aspects of business and management, postgraduate MA, MBA, MSc and PhD theses in business and management and business examination papers.

How this course helps you develop

The MA in Strategic Management and Leadership is a highly practice-based programme and provides you with the opportunity to enhance your current business practice experience and add to your skills set (e.g. interpersonal skills, leadership and project management skills, negotiation, cultural sensitivity, personal planning skills, research skills, etc).

Interaction with tutors, guest speakers and other participants will provide you with the opportunity of being introduced to, and learning about, a range of organisations and sectors that may be outside your field.

By the end of the programme you will have developed a global and cross sector understanding and appreciation of organisational life.

Development and practical application of these skills, where you match theory with practice, culminates in the production of a 20,000 word thesis based upon your organisation and a work-based issue with which you are directly involved.

Many Business School graduates realise significant career progression and go on to achieve high status in the industry of their choice.

We maintain a rigorous and dynamic doctoral programme leading to the higher degrees of MPhil and PhD. Postgraduate students join a supportive, friendly and multicultural research environment.

Free language courses for students - the Open Module

Free language courses are available to full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students on many of our courses, and can be taken as a credit on some courses.

Please note that the free language courses are not available if you are:

The Simon Williams Scholarship 2011 - 2 Awards

The Simon Williams scholarships have been established to commemorate the contribution to the Business School and the University of Simon Williams, Dean of the Business School from 1999 - 2005. The scholarship awards are £1,000 paid towards the cost of programme fees.Criteria
The award committee has identified several significant qualities associated with Simon which made his contribution so distinctive. A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate potential for achievement under these headings but the boundaries inevitably overlap and the committee will consider applications holistically, rather than expecting candidates to provide equally strong evidence under every heading. Candidates should, however, use the headings to structure the way in which they present their application.
1. Intellect
Academic achievement, both before and during an applicant’s time studying at Brookes, is one way of demonstrating intellectual potential but the committee will also be looking for other factors that indicate, for example, use of an analytical approach to solving practical problems or capacity to think creatively.
2. Industry
Under this heading the committee would expect to see evidence showing a high level of commitment to completing an undertaking, self-motivation and a willingness to work hard over and above general expectations.
3. Integrity
Under this heading the committee would expect to see demonstration of a candidate’s personal values in action – concern for others, understanding of the impact of their own behaviour on the groups to which they belong, high standards, loyalty and friendship.
