Sports Therapy (MSc)

Course Description

Practicing in this dynamic field of specialist sports care, you could find yourself working with professional athletes or have the opportunity to start your own sports therapy business.

This course offers you the chance to combine the theoretical knowledge required with hands-on practical experience gained in a real-life therapist environment.

With access to some of the UK's leading sports specialists and resources - from university sports teams to elite athletes - you will have the opportunity to provide therapy support on your placement, harnessing the experience and knowledge needed to be a successful sports therapist.

As well as building skills and knowledge in the assessment and treatment of injury alongside the management of rehabilitation, you will develop a further understanding of different aspects of research design. This course links together the extensive expertise from a range of sport and health academics and is accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists.

Mature Applicants

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

You may work as a sports therapist in a variety of settings, including sports teams, clinics, fitness clubs and education providers. Alternatively, you may choose to be self-employed working across different sectors of sport and leisure. If you hold a sports therapy or physiotherapy qualification, you will have enhanced employment options in health, sport and recreation.

Course Benefits

Our course team includes tutors who engage with elite Olympic and professional athletes, international sports teams as well as local and University teams. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to work across the expertise of two of our University's faculties and maximise the specialist facilities available for both therapy and sport.

You can study flexibly over one or two years, and our placement opportunities offer a wide variety of different experiences, with links to one national professional sports teams, as well as volunteering opportunities.

You will develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills which will help you develop a sound clinical and applied approach to the management of your patients."

Jodie has a clinical background in working within professional and semi-professional football, being part of the medical team and working pitch-side.Her educational background involved working with the education sector for the past 14 years. She combines both her clinical and education experience together allowing her to teach more effectively.

Our state of the art facilities allow for the practical application of anatomy, mobilisation, electrotherapy, massage, heat therapy, cardio vascular and respiratory testing, physiology, anthropometry, rehabilitation and first aid.

- Library
Our libraries are two of the only university libraries in the UK open 24/7 every day of the year. However you like to study, the libraries have got you covered with group study, silent study, extensive e-learning resources and PC suites.

- Clinical Skills Suite
The £1 million suite has been designed to meet the learning needs of a range of health professionals, with specialist equipment in purpose-built rooms enabling a variety of sessions to be carried out in a suitable and safe environment.
