About the course

The MSc Sport Psychology programme at Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh campus combines expertise from our Department of Psychology with the sporting excellence of Oriam, Scotland’s Sport Performance Centre. 

This programme is led by expert sport and exercise psychologists and is accredited by the British Psychological Society, a highly regarded marker of quality assurance that prospective employers value. Applicants for MSc Sport Psychology are eligible for Sports Scholarships that we offer for a variety of student-athletes. These scholarships are available on an individual and team sport basis and give you exclusive access to benefits as well as a percentage reduction on your tuition fees based on the level of scholarship.

Entry Requirements

You will have a relevant (e.g., psychology, sport science) First or 2:1 honours degree or equivalent. It is important that you have previously undertaken an empirical research project as part of your undergraduate degree and have completed a research design and analysis module.

If you do not have these formal qualifications and experience but have significant relevant work/life experience (e.g., an elite-level athlete/coach), you may apply and, if shortlisted, you will be invited for an interview.

Scholarships

Our sports scholarships are designed to embed a high performance training environment into a sports scholars weekly schedule. Our scholarships operate on a top up basis, acting as a fully inclusive method to ensure each individual can reach their full potential in their chosen sport while simultaneously reaching their full academic potential studying at Heriot-Watt University.

Individual Sport Scholarships – Level 1 is aimed at student athletes who are competing at the top of their sport. Athletes will be required to apply for this support on an annual basis and demonstrate their level of performance to be accepted as a Level 1 Sport Scholar (NGB reference required).

Individual Sport Scholarships – Level 2 is structured as recognition of athletes who are studying at Heriot-Watt University in the earlier stages of their sport career with the potential to progress to senior international level in the future. Athletes will be required to apply for this support on an annual basis and demonstrate their level of performance to be accepted as a Level 2 Sport Scholar (NGB reference required), with the expectation of progressing to Level 1 within an appropriate timeframe during their university career.

Club Performance Scholarships – Level 1 encompasses our performance programmes of football and squash.

All Club Performance Scholars will be required to meet the selection criteria every year, with sport performance, academic performance, and commitment to the programme vital for reselection each year.

The MRAC Fellowship is a competitive opportunity where students will be offered a 30% discount from their tuition fees. As part of the fellowship, the successful applicants will undertake Marketing, Recruitment, Admissions and Communications Department, working in rotation with each of those teams to gain experience throughout the year alongside your studies.

The opportunity is open to those coming to study on any postgraduate taught qualification starting in September 2024.

An internship is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student's field of study or career interest. An internship gives a student the opportunity for career exploration and development, and to learn new skills.

Please be aware you can only receive one Heriot-Watt funded scholarship towards your programme of study. So, for example, you cannot receive both this scholarship and the Alumni Discount.
