Sport and exercise are more sophisticated than ever before. From its impact on our bodies to its impact on our communities, our understanding of the subject is growing every day. With that growth comes a whole range of specialist fields and niche subjects, not to mention a variety of career paths. This masters programme can prepare you for those possibilities, offering the mix of critical thinking, expert knowledge and professional skills vital for new areas of health, exercise intervention and sports education.

It’s a programme built on solid scientific and practical foundations, and provides an interdisciplinary perspective – giving you the chance to touch on areas like physiology, psychology, coaching studies, biomechanics and sports injury.

As such, this is a flexible course that offers a range of pathways:

  • MSc Sport and Exercise – Sport and Exercise Biomechanics
  • MSc Sport and Exercise – Sport and Exercise Physiology
  • MSc Sport and Exercise – Sport and Exercise Psychology
  • MSc Sport and Exercise – Sport Coaching
  • MSc Sport and Exercise – Sport and Community Development
  • MA Sport and Exercise – Sport and Leisure History

So whether you see your future working in the lab, in the community or by the track, pitch or pool, we offer a route to the knowledge and skills you’ll need. But whatever path you take, you’ll start with the same solid core of units.

You’ll develop your professional skills, from communication and team-work skills, ensuring you can translate your academic understanding into workplace impact. You’ll also explore a wide range of research methods, discovering how to harness the right tools and approaches to investigate various aspects of sport and exercise. And, from there, you’ll take on a research project – a substantial, masters-level piece of work that lets you explore an area of the subject that interests you most.

The rest of your programme will depend on the pathway you take – whether that means exploring the science of movement, the history of sport or the issues around community wellbeing, to name but a few. While these pathways may be diverse, they’re all delivered with the same high standards, by an exceptional team making the most of superb facilities.

All our Sport and Exercise pathways offer a mix of the practical and theoretical. One day, you might be working in a state-of-the-art laboratory, the next day you could be on one of the eight courts in our sports hall. You could also find yourself on placement with partner organisations like Manchester City FC, working with an organisation like The English Institute of Sport, or even doing research at somewhere like the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance.

Whatever the pathway, wherever your passions in sport lie, this is a programme made to provide a foundation for the future. You’ll leave us equipped to pursue a range of specialist career paths in exercise and sport, specialising in sport development.
