Course Description

This taught MSc in Sports Science is designed to provide you with an advanced, research-led programme of study in sport and exercise science and medicine. A key strength of this programme is its flexibility, which enables you to specialise in physical activity and health, sports performance, or sports medicine.

-This is the only Msc in Sports Science in Scotland that merges Sport and Exercise Medicine and Sport and Exercise Science within a single degree programme providing a broad range of options across these disciplines.

-You will develop and enhance your skills in literature searching and critically evaluating relevant scientific evidence; application of knowledge to novel concepts and situations; experimental design; research methods and ethics; data handling and statistics; interpretation and evaluation of experimental data; scientific writing; and oral presentations.
-The University has state-of-the-art facilities to study performance and health aspects of sport and exercise science, from the whole body to the molecular level. These include advanced exercise laboratories, metabolic investigation suites and a molecular biochemistry lab. We are the best equipped exercise science group for laboratory facilities in Scotland, making the University of Glasgow the perfect place to study an MSc in Sports Science.
-The University has close links with a number of regional/national sporting bodies and a number of professional sporting clubs. There may be opportunities for internships (in place of a research project) for some students.
-You will have access to a number of guest lecture staff providing interactive sessions in their specialist fields.

Programme structure

You will attend lectures, seminars and tutorials and take part in lab classes, journal clubs, presentations and self-directed learning. The programme is made up of 60 compulsory credits and 3 x 20 credit options (X,Y and Z) plus a research project (60 credits)

Career prospects

The flexibility of this programme will provide you with many career opportunities. These include working in clinical exercise, health-promotion or in sports science support. A number of our graduates are employed in senior sports science positions with national sporting bodies and professional sports clubs. This programme also allows doctors and physiotherapists to aid their knowledge; for science graduates, there are opportunities in rehabilitation and higher education. It also provides an excellent basis if you wish to pursue PhD level research.

Lord Kelvin/Adam Smith Scholarships - 10 Awards

The prestigious Lord Kelvin/Adam Smith PhD Scholarship scheme was established in 2007 to support the development of innovative, boundary-crossing research at the University of Glasgow. The scheme supports new partnerships between members of staff and will offer outstanding research students both from home and abroad the opportunity to undertake doctoral training in the context of cutting edge interdisciplinary research projects. The Kelvin Smith PhD Scholarships are project-based and the projects will be listed from the beginning of December each year.Each scholarship will run for up to 4 years and will provide the successful students with a full fee waiver from the host College and an annual stipend at UK Research Council recommended rates (estimated to be £14, 002 for 2015/16). In addition the project will benefit from an annual consumables budget for research and travel costs of up to £5300.

Aga Khan Foundation - International Scholarship Programme - No. of awards TBC

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from select developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies, in order to prepare them for employment, primarily within the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but may consider applications for PhD programmes, in the case of outstanding students who are highly recommended for doctoral studies by their professors and who need a PhD for the fulfilment of their career objectives (academic or research oriented).
Applications for short-term courses are not considered; neither are applications from students who have already started their course of study.To be eligible applicants must
- Be nationals of the following countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique. May also be considered those originally from these countries but currently living in France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada, who are interested in development-related studies and who have no other means of financing their education.

- Have obtained admission to a highly reputable university or programme of study

- Have some years of work experience in their field of interest.Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis.
The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Funding for PhD programmes is only provided for the first two years of study, after which the students are expected to find alternative sources of assistance. Financial assistance is provided according to the needs of students, but the International Scholarship Programme must be considered a lender of last resort. Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some funding from alternative sources.

Application forms can be obtained as of 1st January from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services/Boards in the applicant’s country of current residence.
The application procedures of AKF's International Scholarship Programme are decentralised. Completed applications should be returned to the agency from which the form was obtained. They should not be sent to Geneva.
Applicants should be prepared to be interviewed by local Scholarship Committees about their financial situation, their academic performance, extra-curricular achievements and career plans. Applications and Interview reports of shortlisted candidates are sent to Geneva for the final selection.
The annual Scholarship Selection Meeting takes place in late June or early July and the Aga Khan Foundation notifies all students of the outcome of their application shortly thereafter.

Entry Requirements

A degree in the Sport and Exercise Sciences, Physiotherapy, Medicine, other relevant biological/biomedical sciences, or other health professions/health-related areas (at least a 2:2 Honours Degree or equivalent). Alternative qualifications will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. An IELTS score of at least 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component (or equivalent qualification) is required for students who do not have English as their first language.
