Study a course that can prepare you for a career in sport and exercise psychology. Gain core skills in the academic and intellectual understanding and researching of sport and exercise psychology. Understand the role of psychological interventions for sport performers, coaches and teams.

If you hold the British Psychological Society (BPS) Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) this course will support you along the path to becoming a chartered sport and exercise psychologist.

How you learn

You develop your work-related and applied skills throughout the course whilst keeping a major focus on developing your core psychological skills, especially in the sport and exercise psychology subject area.

Applied learning

The Developing Professional Practice module offers you the opportunity to enter the sector of your choice to develop understanding of the context of sport and exercise psychology practice.

It may be possible to study your research project overseas if it satisfies the module aims and learning outcomes.

Sheffield Hallam are a skills development partner of the Chartered Institute for Managing Sport and Physical Activity.

You will have the opportunity to undertake the University's Leadership Award. The intention is that this will enrich and develop your competitiveness in the job market and advance high-level employability-related transferable attributes that support your transition into the sport profession or the wider career sector.

Our graduates are ideally positioned to progress to Stage 2 of the QSEP and work towards becoming a registered sport and exercise psychologist. Previous graduates of this course have gone on to work for:

  • physical activity referral schemes

Others have gone onto further PhD study or to work as research assistants.


This course is accredited by the British Psychological Society.
