Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Occupational Health Nursing) PgD

Course Description

Gain the knowledge and skills you need to become a specialist practitioner in occupational health nursing! We provide everything you need to prepare for a role in specialist community public health nursing, using a selection of fantastic facilities and the experience of expert teaching staff to enhance your learning further.

Course outline

You'll be prepared for a role as a Specialist Community Public Health Nursing within Occupational Health Nursing, allowing you to register your qualification with the NMC. You'll gain valuable knowledge and skills in relation to public health, evidence-based practice, leadership, change management and collaborative working. It will also develop specialist knowledge and skills in aspects such as health assessment, clinical care and case management.

We provide a balance of 50% theory and 50% practice. This will be facilitated in an area specific to Occupational Health Nursing. There will also be opportunities to gain alternative practice experience in another relevant setting during the course.

Graduate destinations

You'll be able to work as an Occupational Health Nurse, and eligible to apply for registration on the NMC Nursing register in your named pathway. Previous students have gone into successful careers within occupational health, as well as working as health and safety advisers, case managers and counsellors.

You may also wish to continue your education further through one of our MSc courses in Practice Development.

Other admission details

You must have access to a Practice Teacher, i.e. SCPHN (OH) with an NMC approved Practice Teacher qualification. This is an NMC requirement. Students are responsible for sourcing their own practice teacher. Students must be working in an occupational health setting, with a varied role, not exclusively telephone based. Applications should be made before 30 June for September start. You will be interviewed for selection for this programme. During the interview you will be offered advice on the suitability of the award dependent on factors such as currency of prior learning, and your personal and professional development needs. You will need support from your employer, as regular attendance at University is required. You do not need clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
