Our goal is to provide you with a skill set that will enable you to critically engage with the most up-to-date analysis of the changing worlds of work, the forecasting of economic futures, the development of policy in the field of labour market activation and unemployment alleviation. You will also acquire the skills necessary to design, conduct, write up and communicate evidence-based reports on work, labour market and employment related issues. The taught programme is built around three components: a core theoretical module, substantive courses on political economy of work, on labour market studies and work futures and trends and methods courses. Beyond this, the researching and writing of a thesis constitutes 30 credits. The MA is scheduled on two days per week during the academic year in so far as is practicable.
This course will be of interest to people involved in or aspiring to work in a career in social or public policy making; labour market analysis; trade unionism and workers' rights organisations; social entrepreneurship; local and national government programmes oriented toward work and labour market initiatives; community programmes such as Local Employment Services. It will also be of interest to graduates in the social sciences and cognate disciplines who are considering undertaking doctoral research in the fields of sociology of work, social policy, education and innovation.
BA in Sociology or cognate discipline with 2.2 or higher, or international equivalent. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.
