About the course
This unique programme has been designed to create forward-thinking conversations about what Shakespeare is and what Shakespeare can be in today’s world.
As a student on the only course of its kind in the world, you will study everything from the history of Shakespeare in society, literary criticism and theatre practices; before putting your knowledge in to practice through a newly devised piece of theatre in response to Shakespeare’s work.
This creative and ambitious programme is ideal for aspiring academics, actors, writers, directors, arts administrators, as well as anyone with a lively interest in Shakespeare.
Entry Requirements
A bachelors degree (2:1) in a relevant field
OR
Relevant professional experience. This should be demonstrated in a portfolio which catalogues and contextualises your work in a relevant field (e.g. catalogue of a recent art installation, actor’s CV, web-based archive of recent work, folio of published poems, etc.)
In your application, you should use your personal statement to indicate your creative potential and reflect on your existing creative work. All prospective students must also submit a sample of written work as part of the online application process.

Why did you choose Shakespeare at the University of Birmingham?
“Studying Shakespeare in the centre of Stratford-Upon-Avon has been incredible. Being just a short walk away from the RSC theatres and Shakespeare’s Birthplace has really enhanced my studying. I chose the course because of the amazing links UoB has with The RSC. Knowing that on this course I would have the opportunity to be involved with two projects at The RSC theatres made it a very easy decision and I did not apply for anywhere else.”
What is life like as a student at the Shakespeare Institute?
“Student life at the Shakespeare Institute is wonderful. The staff are all extremely talented, knowledgeable and at the same time, friendly and supportive. Being in the centre of Stratford-Upon-Avon really enhances student life as there are often discounted tickets available to students for the RSC, and there are amazing events and lectures being held at the Institute and at the Birthplace Trust, just up the road. One of the most fantastic events I have been to, was when the outstanding actress Harriet Walter came to visit the Birthplace Trust to talk about her book Brutus and Other Heroines. Her lecture was magnificent, and afterwards she answered all of our questions and signed copies of her book. It was an evening I shall never forget.”
Scholarships
The College of Arts and Law is pleased to offer a number of Home fees-only scholarships for candidates wishing to study full- and part-time masters-level courses from September 2023.
Applications are welcome from UK, EU and Overseas students wishing to study any discipline within the College's five schools:
English, Drama, American and Creative Studies
History and Cultures
Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music
Law
Philosophy, Theology and Religion
Value of Scholarship(s)
One year's tuition fees at Home rates
Eligibility
These awards are open to UK, EU and Overseas students, studying full-time or part-time campus-based masters-level programmes in the College of Arts and Law.
They are available to students who commence their study at the start of the 2023 academic year. These awards are not available to current Masters students.
International students are eligible to apply, and will receive a reduction in tuition fees equivalent to the Home rate if successful.
Applications for funding can only be considered alongside an application to study.
Application Procedure
In order to apply, you must have completed an application to study. You will then need to complete our online funding application form. Your application must also be supported by two references.

By applying, you will be automatically considered for relevant College of Arts and Law scholarships. Only complete applications submitted before the deadline will be considered.
