Security and Risk Management (Certificate, Diploma, MSc)

Course Description

The management of risk is a key element of all business activity, but understanding what risk actually means and how to adequately mitigate it requires a focused understanding.

See the website http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/sbe/executive-education/programmes/accredited/srm/

Many of the risks faced by businesses are security risks generated by inherent vulnerabilities, ‘bad’ actors or external sources. These include employees with mal-intent, low-level and organised criminals, cyber-criminals and so on. This programme seeks to provide security professionals with the necessary knowledge to understand business and security risk and to be able to operate effectively in mitigating risk and countering threats within prevailing regulatory and legal frameworks. The programme examines traditional threats, whilst tackling contemporary and emergent security threats. There is the opportunity for students to be immersed in business and management practice, and to take part in emergency management simulations.

The programme’s specific aims are to:
- Promote knowledge and understanding in the subject of Security and Risk Management.

- Provide advanced training where an opportunity is afforded for security and risk professionals to bring together professional expertise and growing academic abilities.

- Promote security and risk management as serious subjects for academic study within security, private security, and security risk industries.

- Enhance the self-esteem of the participating students and to establish security and risk management as relevant (and connected) disciplines within the corporate environment in order that it might rank alongside other management disciplines.

- Assist individuals with career development, advancement of their professional competence and standing, and their lifelong learning.

- Provide an opportunity for security professionals from uniformed and public sector backgrounds to migrate into the corporate and private sector security domains.

- Provide a unique academic qualification in security and risk management that brings together professional expertise and academic disciplines relevant to this interdisciplinary field.

- Assist with entry into security representative bodies, for example The Security Institute, Association of Security Consultants and to assist in gaining Fellow status. To similarly assist with entry into professional networks with a view to expanding the employability and commercial traction of the candidate in their post-graduation professional life.

The programme runs over 12 months to 36 months depending on the qualification. There are three levels of qualification, each leading to the next – Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc.

The individual modules are delivered in what is known as block format. So, as opposed to the usual style of university courses which are two or three hours of contact time per week over a ten week term, these modules are delivered in four full working days of contact time, with then guided study, tutor contact, and deliverables rounding the module off.

The programme has a wide array of assessment methods to allow students to highlight the best of their abilities.

Core Modules (Certificate, Diploma and MSc):
All students irrespective of their qualification aim will study the following modules:
- What is Resilience?
- Risk Management
- Management Skills
- Cyber Security and the Management of Computer Related Crime (distance learning)
