The Secondary (English Medium) PGDE programme offers an exciting opportunity to pursue a career in teaching. In partnership with various councils and campuses across Scotland, this one-year course combines 18 weeks of university study with 18 weeks of professional practice in schools. You can choose from a range of subjects, including Art and Design, Biology and Science, Computing Science, English, and Mathematics, among others. The programme focuses on building professional knowledge, developing teacher identity and professionalism, reflection and enquiry, and practical teaching experience. Upon completion, you will be eligible for provisional registration as a secondary teacher, paving the way for further career advancement in education.

About the course

The course is offered in partnership with Argyll and Bute, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Highland, Moray, Orkney Islands, Perth and Kinross, and Shetland Islands Councils, each working with the university through their local campus. The course is also offered in partnership with Aberdeen City and Scottish Borders councils, with applicants based in the Borders registered through UHI Inverness.

The PGDE (Secondary) consists of 18 weeks study at the university plus 18 weeks in professional practice in schools.

The subjects listed below can be studied at the following campuses: Aberdeen City; UHI Argyll (Oban); UHI Inverness; UHI Outer Hebrides (Stornoway); UHI Moray; UHI North Highland; UHI Orkney; Perth College UHI; UHI Shetland; the Scottish Borders; or UHI West Highland.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold a relevant degree at undergraduate level or above; preference will be given to those possessing a degree at honours level, though consideration will also be given to those holding ordinary degrees.

The alumni discount applies only to the tuition fee element and does not apply to any additional costs which may be required to complete the course.
