Secondary Music (PGCE)

Course Description

Music teaching offers a rewarding career for graduates with an interest in practical music making and a commitment to education. The PGCE (Secondary) Music course provides trainees with a variety of opportunities to understand more about the place of Music in the secondary school curriculum, develop a range of teaching styles appropriate to the delivery of pupils' entitlement within the National Curriculum, and develop and the knowledge and skills which will enable them to enter the teaching profession.

Through Liverpool Hope's well-established partnerships with schools in the region, you will be able to gain experience of teaching Music across the 11-18 age group and across a wide range of student ability. The course includes a diverse range of experiences with expert guidance, allowing you to widen your areas of practical and subject knowledge alongside developing your specialist areas. Trainees have the opportunity to work with Hope's partners in the community, including the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir and the Music Support Service. You will also be encouraged to develop your musical skills through performance and participation in workshops and performances.

The Music with Instrumental Teaching route has opportunities for students to develop the knowledge, skills and strategies appropriate to instrumental teaching. In the latest subject specific feedback from Ofsted, the quality of training in PGCE (Secondary) Music at Liverpool Hope University was judged to be 'Outstanding': "Tutors are very committed to their work and are competent as musicians, trainers and administrators; support provided by school mentors is very good." Prospective trainees will have opportunities to be involved in the musical and cultural life of the city, which will add another dimension to their professional and personal development.

Entry Requirements

Grade C in English and Mathematics at GCSE (or equivalent) First degree (usually 2.1 or above) incorporating at least 50% Music Demonstrable enthusiasm for the subject in general and a real desire to teach music Recent relevant experience Basic knowledge of the National Curriculum Wide subject knowledge Effective communication skills The ability to communicate clearly, fluently and accurately in spoken and written Standard English It is a government requirement that you take the numeracy and literacy skills tests as part of the application process.
