About the course

If you’ve got an undergraduate degree and are striving to become a secondary school Maths teacher, then studying our PGCE Secondary Education with QTS (Maths) will help you on your way. You’ll develop your subject specialist knowledge alongside hands-on classroom experience.

A significant amount of your learning will take place whilst on placement within one of our partnership schools. You’ll benefit from being able to observe experienced teachers, gain practical hands-on experience and mentoring to help you develop into an outstanding and successful teacher.

Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. During the year you will become familiar with the overall curriculum and the national strategies for teaching mathematics. You’ll learn how to plan and teach interesting and creative lessons which encourage enquiry and discussion and foster pupils’ enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Successful completion of your PGCE course prepares you to start your first teaching year (NQT year) within a secondary school setting. Our course is designed to prepare you to teach pupils in the 11-16 age.

The course is a one year postgraduate certificate in secondary education. The programme is divided into two main themes:

Initial Professional Development

You’ll have the opportunity to explore creative ways to interpret your knowledge into a language a child can understand. We help prepare you for the classroom, allowing you to develop your own thinking, teaching and subject knowledge base to a level which you can trial in your placements. Themes include educational psychology, how young people learn, behaviour management, assessment, inclusion, creative and innovative teaching methods and designing learning. You research theories of child development, gain a greater understanding of current professional issues in secondary schools and develop your own educational philosophy.

Mathematics Specialist Subject Pedagogy

We hope to change the way you think about mathematics teaching and learning, using practical and exploratory approaches in your own subject development and in your lesson planning. You’ll learn how to plan and teach interesting and creative lessons, which encourage enquiry and discussion. Sessions encourage you to unravel what shapes the positive attitudes to mathematics with the aim of helping you to become an inspirational and exceptional teacher.

You’ll learn in small, friendly and supportive groups, designed to give you the confidence to succeed.

Course tutors are very experienced and supportive and you’ll have a personal tutor to support you through your studies. Teaching is through workshops, tutorials and lectures, some with guest speakers, and through group work with other teacher trainees from a variety of subject specialisms as well as specialist subject groups.

Three of the PGCE modules are at Masters level and afterwards you will have the opportunity to continue your studies further to complete a Masters in Education, supporting your NQT year and your early professional development.

Assessment is typically through the completion of a range of classroom activities, written assignments, reports, personal subject audits and the development of portfolios of evidence. There are no formal examinations and the assignments are carefully designed to help you to develop your teaching practice further.

A key element of your studies and learning takes place whilst you’re on placement. You’ll undertake a number of compulsory placements as part of your programme, in fact you’ll spend around 120 days in at least two partner schools.

You’ll experience the wider role of a teacher in secondary education. You’ll have the support of both subject and professional mentors in schools who will help you to develop your practice through observations, planning meetings, weekly tutorials, reports and in-depth lesson evaluations. Your university tutor will visit you in school to guide, support and evaluate your progress. Our partnership schools are situated across the local area including Kirklees, Calderdale, Wakefield, Leeds, Bradford, and we’ll endeavour to place you in a convenient location.

Professional links and accreditations

Upon successful completion of the programme we recommend Qualified Teaching Status be awarded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership . This accreditation is reviewed on a regular basis.

Career support

Successful completion of your PGCE course prepares you to start your first teaching post (NQT year) within a secondary school setting.

Further study

During the PGCE programme you will complete 90 credits at masters level and there are opportunities to continue your masters level study onto our MA Education programme. As part of the MA Education programme you’ll study our Early Professional Development for Newly Qualified Teachers module which is designed to support your developing practice in your first year of teaching.

Inspiring Graduate

“The course fully prepared me to meet the teaching standards and for my current role as an Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).

The PGCE at the University of Huddersfield allows you to get into school very early in the school year and gives you ample opportunity to improve your skills across two very structured school placements.

This course is highly demanding and you will quickly begin to feel that you are very much a full-time teacher to the pupils on your placement. The school mentors and the University tutors are very supportive and help you to manage your time and there’s a nice balance of time on placement and in lectures across each month.

I am currently completing my NQT year in a large secondary school where I teach 11-17 year olds, and plan to continue focussing on improving my classroom practise and exploring the various avenues within teaching.” - Imogen Henderson, Graduate
