Do you have a desire to motivate and stimulate students from diverse backgrounds to study mathematics?

If you have an interest and strong background in maths, our teacher training course is for you. In addition to possessing sound mathematical skills, we are looking for applicants who have a genuine passion to communicate and break down this complex subject to young secondary school students.

The quality of teacher training in secondary education was rated as "Good" in Ofsted's report for Initial Teacher Education 2016. The report identified that "trainees demonstrate a good understanding of the requirements of the teachers' standards. Trainees and newly qualified teachers are reflective and self-motivated."

Your teacher training

Our course will prepare you to become a professional, creative, competent and reflective teacher.

You will have the opportunity to gain 60 Master's-level credits as part of our PGCE. In addition to university-based workshops, our course includes two school placements plus extensive support in the form of online materials.

During your training, you will be investigating how to address common errors and misconceptions through pedagogy. All the while you will be improving your core subject knowledge of maths and how these skills relate to Maths Mastery.

Your development and future

Our expert lecturers will work with you to widen your individual skills, expertise and background knowledge across the field of mathematics education. This will build on your natural flair and passion as a teacher so you will successfully engage with young students.

Our past trainees have also contributed to a national project run by the Personal Finance Education Group. This supports schools in the teaching and learning of financial mathematics.

Subject knowledge enhancement

We give you the option of a blended Subject Knowledge Enhancement course prior to starting your PGCE.

What you will study

Students are required to study the following compulsory modules.

Graduates are equipped for careers working in secondary schools and other educational settings.

We are offering pre-programme Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses to prepare you to teach in your specialist subject area and enhance your subject knowledge.

For more information on our SKE courses, click here.

SKE courses can range from 8 weeks - 24 weeks. Studying an SKE course will mean that you may also be eligible for a tax-free SKE training bursary of £200 per week to support you throughout the course. For example, if this is applicable to you, you could receive £3,200 over the span of a 16 week course.

For more information regarding funding for SKE courses, please visit the Get into Teaching website.
