Course content

The Faculty of Engineering and Science offers advanced research training opportunities across a broad range of subject areas, including chemical, pharmaceutical, biomedical, environmental and sports sciences. The research activities within the Department are supported by state of the art analytical and computer facilities.

Upon acceptance to a programme, students normally register initially for an MPhil, and at the end of the first year, the student is examined by viva voce for consideration for transfer to PhD. Upon completion of the Doctoral training, students are ideally equipped to work in an academic or industrial research environment.

Recent research project topics include:

  • Solar energy conversion
  • Synthesis of biologically active molecules
  • Fragment-based drug discovery
  • In situ monitoring of chemical reactions
  • Treatment of contaminated soils by accelerated carbonation
  • Production of novel silicate-based sorbents
  • Integrated production of biodiesel from oilseed rape
  • Pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases
  • Bioremediation and composting technologies
  • Expert cognition and training.

Multidisciplinary options

The programme is designed collaboratively between four of our departments, offering a variety of choice:

  • Medway School of Pharmacy
  • Natural Resources Institute (NRI)
  • Life and Sports Science
  • Pharmaceutical, Chemical and Environmental Science.

Natural Resources Institute

The NRI is a unique multi-disciplinary academic centre within the university. It has an established reputation for delivering high quality research, advice, teaching and training in support of global food security, sustainable development and poverty reduction. NRI projects include partnerships with the UK Government's Department for International Development and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Medway School of Pharmacy

Medway School of Pharmacy is a unique collaboration between the University of Greenwich and Kent University. It offers specialist teaching in pharmacy, pharmacology, physiology and chemistry. Because of its close knit and well supported approach, it scores consistently high marks in the National Student Survey each year.

Department of Life and Sports Science

In our Life and Sports Science department you can specialise in a range of topics, such as medical biochemistry, medical physiology or sports science (with professional football coaching), depending on your interest. Some subjects, like biomedical sciences, are vocational and accredited by professional bodies, while subjects like biological sciences provide entry to teaching and research.

Department of Pharmaceutical, Chemical & Environmental Sciences

Teaching in this department is underpinned by exciting, world-class research activities in all areas. The department has strong research and enterprise interests in medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry, metabonomics, bioactive materials, chemometrics, land remediation, geographical information systems and environmental conservation and chemistry.

Location

The Medway campus is only an hour from central London, based on the Kent coast in a county known as the Garden of England. It's two stops away from Europe by train, and less than an hour from the local and global pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Aesica. There are several hospitals locally for NHS-based placements and a wide range of private and research laboratories such as those found in Kent Science Park. We create opportunities for students to engage with these organisations.

You can also explore the areas of outstanding natural beauty such as Darland Banks, preserved by the Kent Wildlife Trust, and Cliffe Pools, protected by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Medway is an excellent place to study biology.

Outcomes

The aims of the programme are to:

  • Develop, create and interpret new knowledge, through original research or other advanced scholarship, of a quality to satisfy peer review, extend the forefront of the discipline, and merit publication
  • Systematically acquire an understanding of a substantial body of knowledge which is at the forefront of an academic discipline or area of professional practice
  • Demonstrate the ability to conceptualise, design and implement a project for the generation of new knowledge, applications or understanding at the forefront of the discipline, and to adjust the project design in the light of unforeseen problems
  • Show a detailed understanding of applicable techniques for research and advanced academic enquiry.

Assessment

Students are assessed through their thesis and an oral examination.

Careers

Graduates from this programme can pursue careers in industry, government and academia.
