The MEd School Guidance Counselling degree is designed to advance the professional development of school Guidance Counsellors and builds on the Postgraduate Diploma in School Guidance Counselling (PGDSGC). This one year programme involves participation in regular research-support seminars and consultation with supervisors towards the completion of a thesis.
The MEd School Guidance Counselling is assessed through a research dissertation only, with training in research methodologies.
This MEd SGC builds on the PGDSGC (Post Graduate Diploma in School Guidance Counselling) and aims to advance school-based Guidance Counsellors’ professional development. The programme is recognised by the Department of Education and Skills and the National Centre for Guidance in Education as a professional, international qualification in Guidance Counselling.

Certified copies of all official transcripts of results for all non-Maynooth University qualifications listed MUST accompany the application. Failure to do so will delay your application being processed. All applicants are asked to provide two academic references. Non-Maynooth University students are asked to provide a copy of birth certificate or a valid passport.
Applicants must have successfully completed all courses in the one-year Postgraduate Diploma in School Guidance and Counselling (PGDSGC) or equivalent, with a grade of at least 2.1. Applicants are expected to submit a thesis proposal of no less than 2,500 words that identifies a research issue, situates the problem in scholarly literature(s), and proposes a plan of research. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level. For international students for whom which English is not their first language, and English language exam certificate showing IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) is required.
