Our MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology (REST) is the UK’s longest established master’s specialising in renewable and sustainable energy engineering.  For 25 years, more than 500 students from 30 countries have successfully completed the course.  Our highly skilled graduate energy engineers are prized by industry - many now have senior positions across industry, commerce, government and NGOs.

The course is designed and delivered by experts from the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST), the UK’s largest sustainable energy engineering research centre. At CREST, we have influential partnerships with industry, policy makers and researchers across the world. This keeps the course up-to-date with the latest advances in sustainable energy engineering. And because all modules are taught by leading experts, you will benefit greatly from their experience.

What you'll study

This is a practical, industry-focused programme. It covers the technical principles and methods underpinning renewable energy engineering. It also covers economic, social and policy aspects involved in engineering a low carbon energy future.

The compulsory modules will give you a comprehensive overview of the most important technologies across the renewable energy sector. They also examine key global energy policy and development aspects.

Our optional modules allow you to tailor your course to areas that match your career aspirations.

The major research project gives you the opportunity to focus in depth on your key areas of interest.


Compulsory

  • Sustainability and Energy Systems: Explores the energy sector at a global level and examines the benefits of renewable and sustainable energy for developing societies. You will discuss energy provision in areas such as India, Asia, and South America, and how this can impact people's lives.
  • Bioenergy: Investigates the technology and sustainability issues surrounding the most common source of renewable energy. You will explore issues around providing both heat and power.
  • Integration of Renewables: Considers the evolution of power systems towards a low carbon future, with a focus on the key electrical engineering principles.
  • Water Power: Covers resource availability and engineering aspects of turbines. Includes discussion of hydropower station operation, conservation, and techno-economics.
  • Solar Power (PV): Takes an holistic look at technologies, design, integration and the future outlook for photovoltaics.
  • Wind Power 1: Explore the engineering, economic and practical challenges of this fast-growing energy source.
  • Research Project: Be mentored on a project of your choice by world class experts in sustainable energy engineering.


Optional

  • Energy system investment and risk: Analysing investment decision-making and risk management for the energy sector.
  • Energy storage: The design and development of the low cost, high density electrical and thermal energy storage.
  • Advanced wind: Modern high performance turbines, offshore wind development and in-depth wind modelling for complex environments.
  • Advanced photovoltaics: Developing specialist knowledge – in-depth science and practical implementation.
  • Solar thermal systems: Explores the challenges and opportunities for passive solar buildings. Includes the key principles of design and operation of solar thermal systems.
