Renewable Energy Systems Technology (MSc)

Course Description

This MSc teaches an international community of students about the latest advances in clean power developments and enables graduates to design and develop benign renewable energy solutions that can be implemented in countries around the world.

It is aimed at engineers and natural scientists pursuing or wishing to pursue a career in the renewable energy sector, particularly those in technical positions e.g. systems designers, technical consultants and R&D engineers and scientists.

Core study areas include solar power, wind power, water power, biomass, sustainability and energy systems, integration of renewables and a research project.

Optional study areas include advanced solar thermal, advanced photovoltaics, advanced wind, energy storage, energy system investment and risk management.

How will you learn

You can select options to develop a chosen specialism in greater depth, including through your individual project which is often carried out with renewable energy companies or alongside the research portfolio of our international experts.

This is a very practical course backed up by strong theoretical understanding of the principles and facts behind renewable energy production.

Assessment is via a mixture of written and practical coursework and examinations. The individual research project is also assessed by viva. Because of its multidisciplinary nature, assessment may be done in collaboration with academic colleagues from Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Materials.


We have current industrial equipment and laboratories for PV cell production, PV module production, qualification testing, PV quality control, energy storage research facilities, vacuum glazing, wind flow measurement, and instrumentation for energy consumption and monitoring.

You will benefit from experience with industrial tools and software for system design (e.g. PV Syst, WASP, ReSoft Windfarm, DNV GL Windfarmer), materials research hardware (e.g. pilot lines for commercial solar cell production) and quality control laboratories.

This enables you to acquire the practical skills that industry uses today and builds the foundations for developing your knowledge base throughout their career.

Careers and further study

There is a world-wide shortage of skilled engineers in this field and so the combination of hands on experience with global industry standard tools and techniques and the strong theoretical knowledge which graduates of this course acquire, makes them highly attractive to employers.

Students may carry out their projects as part of a short-term placement in a company and graduates of this course are often fast-tracked in their applications. Consequently we have an extensive network of alumni, many in top jobs.

Mairead Kennedy

I had been working as a water services engineer in Ireland for four years when I decided to return to university to pursue a career in renewable energy. It is an area which I find interesting and where I believe there to be great potential for growth and career opportunities in the long term.

Studying on this course was an extremely rewarding experience all round. Alongside the academic study I would encourage everyone to take part in the social aspect of being a student again as I immensely enjoyed meeting people from a wide variety of different backgrounds. In itself this was an enriching experience but it also gave me insight into the global issues surrounding renewable energy.

I really enjoyed the Solar and Wind Power sections of the course because these were areas where I had some knowledge and a lot of interest. I had originally planned to work in the wind power sector but one of the Professors in CREST circulated an interesting job advertisement so now I am working in an engineering firm where I specialise in heat networks. The work is very rewarding and diverse, ranging from a feasibility study for a Micro Scale Anaerobic Digestion facility to the design and planning for both District Heating and City-scale energy projects

The MSc really developed my technical knowledge and skills in this area and the Solar Thermal and Passive House Design modules feed directly into my work with my new company. This is such an exciting area and one which I feel marries together both my societal and environmental views with my technical knowledge and expertise.

I was sponsored by my employer, the University of Bahrain, to come to Loughborough and study on a full-time basis for an MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology.

The University of Bahrain will only send its employees to the best universities around the world, and after carefully researching renewable energy courses both inside and outside the UK, I found the MSc course offered by CREST to be the best.

I had such a good experience doing my Masters at Loughborough, I stayed on to do a PhD as my employer is keen to establish a research field in this area and promote renewable energy throughout Bahrain. Whilst studying for my PhD I also supported CREST’s Distance Learning course as a tutor which I really enjoyed. Now I’m back in Bahrain I’m using the skills and experience I gained as a student at Loughborough to advise Government and also individuals.

The objective of the Fellowship is to provide financial support to selected graduate engineers wishing to study full-time Masters’ degree courses in subjects with a bias towards energy, sustainability, infrastructure, environmental technology and water resource engineering. Each Fellowship has a financial value of £8,000.

For 2014 entry the scholarship application procedure is an open competition. Students may only apply for the scholarship after an offer for a place has been made.
