Course content

How do we balance finite resources and infinite human ambition? Renewable energy systems are part of the solution.

Our MSc Renewable Energy Systems is ideal for graduates from engineering, science or other relevant backgrounds who also have an interest in pursuing a successful career in research, technological change and the commercialisation of renewable-energy systems. 

You will be taught by academics who are experts in their fields, and have access to a range of advanced facilities and resources.

What you will study

Created in the context of the rapid advancement of the renewable-energy industry, our MSc Renewable Energy Systems Engineering investigates both renewable energy and systems technologies.

It will give you opportunities to learn about major renewable-energy technologies, energy-sector economics, supply-chain management and sustainable development.

It is designed to build your competence and confidence in the research, development and engineering tasks that are demanded of scientific engineers in the renewable and sustainable-development sector.

Facilities, equipment and academic support

Your modules will be taught by a total of six full-time members of staff and a number of visiting lecturers.

As part of your learning experience, you will have at your disposal a wide range of relevant software needed to support the course material dissertation projects. In recent years, this work included the design of various business and knowledge-based systems on the internet, the application of optimisation algorithms, and semantic web applications.

If you choose to pursue a technology-based project, you will have access to a wide range of relevant software and laboratory facilities across the University, such as the process engineering facility, a control and robots facility, and signal processing laboratories.

The work related to the MSc dissertation can often be carried out in parallel with, and in support of, ongoing research. In the past, several graduates have carried on their MSc research to a PhD course.

Career prospects

Engineers and scientists are increasingly expected to have skills in information systems engineering and decision-support systems alongside their main technical and or scientific expertise.

As a graduate of this course, you will be well prepared to help technology-intensive organisations make important decisions in view of vast amounts of information by adopting, combining, implementing and executing the right technologies.
