Course content

Suitable for either primary or secondary school teachers, for those with QTS or working towards it, this course is designed to enhance your understanding of education and teaching through master's-level study.

The course is taught through a mixture of face-to-face sessions at the London Road campus with online tutorial support. The sessions will take place over three days in the autumn half term, two days in the spring half term and a tutorial at the end of the Easter holiday.

You will complete two assignments. One will address a whole-school issue (such as behaviour or inclusion). The other will involve an action research project designed to develop an aspect of your work in the classroom.

What will you study?

Students undertaking the Primary Postgraduate Certificate in Education must take:

  • Special Study
  • Professional Studies: the Reflective Practitioner

Students undertaking the Secondary Postgraduate Certificate in Education must take:

  • The reflective teacher
  • Investigating Practice

Please note that all modules are subject to change.

What career can you have?

In addition to the many masters' and PhD graduates, each year we have over 500 students become newly qualified teachers (NQTs). Our excellent links with local schools ensure that our employment rates are consistently high, with well over 90 per cent of our NQTs finding a teaching job last year.

With pay scales to match other industries, job security, an excellent pension and better work-life balance, teaching is becoming one of the most sought-after professions of today. Our masters' and professional courses have allowed many teachers to gain promotion within their institutions. A number of students also continue their studies onto EdD/PhD courses to develop a career in educational research.
