Real Estate MSc


Course Description

The course aims to produce graduates who meet the academic, professional and ethical standards required by the RICS. It is designed for you to develop your practical and theoretical knowledge and critical understanding of issues and subjects relevant to your field of study, and your personal, interpersonal and professional skills and capabilities.

It enables you to operate as an independent reflective practitioner and provides you with both transferable and specific vocational skills which can be used to gain professional employment in a rapidly changing environment.

The course includes practical, client-focused property projects. These involve you completing technical and professional tasks and applying creative solutions that draw on your developing knowledge. You also complete an individual in-depth dissertation that requires a critical and evaluative approach to professional practice and theory.

The course includes an interdisciplinary development task in a different country. On this task you work with students from across related subjects to increase understanding of the other roles in the profession that interact on a day-to-day basis and how the role of a Chartered Surveyor fits in with these roles. It also develops the skills and knowledge that are essential to becoming an effective professional practitioner.

Professional recognition

This course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Employability

Employability is embedded throughout the course, and modules have been designed to reflect the demands of both the professional body and relevant industry employers. This is supported by the University Employment and Careers Service, departmental employment advisors and departmental initiatives, such as the Natural and Built Environment Employers Fair.

As a Department, Natural and Built Environment participate within a number of sector-specific initiatives that enhance both employability and employment opportunities for our students, such as The Property Training Forum; a collaborative forum comprising leading firms and universities within the sector which coordinates recruitment rounds, provides valuable input in terms of developing students and, with the support of professional bodies, seeks to improve the careers prospects of our students.

Our graduates have an outstanding employment record. Recent graduates have joined surveying consultancies such as Sanderson Weatherall, Deloitte, JLL, CBRE, GVA, Cushman & Wakefield, Lambert Smith Hampton and Savills.

Others have joined in-house corporate real estate departments, smaller independent professional firms and the public sector.

Entry Requirements

Minimum 2:2 degree in any discipline or an equivalent professional qualification.
As a full-time student you are encouraged to obtain a period of pre-course professional work experience before joining.
As a part-time student you should be employed in general practice surveying or have substantial contact with a property-related firm.
If English is not your first language you typically need an IELTS 6.0 score with a minimum of 5.5 in all other skills or equivalent.
