Public Service Management - MBA


Course Description

Designed for professionals who wish to progress in their career, our part-time Public Services Management MBA will develop your leadership potential in the public sector, cultivating the analytical skills and entrepreneurial thinking employers are looking for from their senior management.

This course will help you address the complex organisational issues experienced in the fast-changing political and global environment which public services and not-for-profit organisations face.

Case studies and professional work-based projects will enable you to practically apply your new skills to the benefit of employers. Guest speakers, industry visits and attending core modules with a mix of full-time, part-time and international students will provide you with a wider perspective and exposure to different cultures as experiences are shared.

Accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the only chartered professional body in the field of management and leadership, you will graduate with a degree as well as the CMI’s Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership.

During your studies, you will benefit from free membership of both the Institute of Directors and the Chartered Management Institute. Our partnership with professional associations ensures the Brighton MBA remains relevant to the needs of today's business practitioners.

Course structure

The course is flexible so you can choose to study via a combination of evening classes and weekly blocks, depending on your specific needs. Part-time study allows you to apply the tools, theories and techniques learned during the course to your workplace, bringing an immediate benefit to your organisation.

It is possible to complete the course in two years, but most students spread the workload over three years. Should your circumstances change, you may suspend your studies and restart at a later date. The course has multiple start dates throughout the year.

Syllabus

You can start your part-time MBA in January or September, sharing core modules with managers from all our MBA specialisms. Once you have completed your first core modules you can choose to specialise in Leadership, Knowledge and Innovation Management or Public Service Management.

You can also choose from a host of optional modules which will allow you to specialise in the areas of management you are most interested in. Most MBA modules can be studied in the evening or in weekly blocks.

Managing People and Organisations

Specialism Modules:

Developing Strategic and Change Capabilities for Public Services (9 days)
Exploring Partnership Working (4-day block)
Leadership with Ethics (5-day block)
Strategy, Planning and Commissioning (5-day block)
Marketing and Communication (5-day block)

International study visit

Your international study-visit to a European organisation would take place in the autumn or spring term and gives you the opportunity to develop your international perspective.

You will experience live case studies and meet senior managers while engaging institutions such as Belfast City Council (Belfast, Northern Ireland), Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne (Epernay, France) and European Commission (Brussels, Belgium).

Flexible study

Core modules will give you thorough knowledge in each key business discipline. You will then have the opportunity to tailor your MBA through a choice of specialisms and option modules.

Our part-time MBA typically takes one day per week over two to three years, or on a block basis. When studying in the block format modules can be taken in any order to suit your interests, apart from the final module.

If you want a more flexible approach, you can also sign up for one module at a time and build your qualification as you go, exiting with a Postgraduate Certificate in Management, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Management, or an MBA.

Part-time students can choose the order in which they study their modules – to benefit their organisation’s specific needs.

Learning support

Experienced, professionally qualified lecturers and small class sizes will ensure your learning needs are supported.

Online learning tools and libraries also ensure academic journals, e-books, business articles and other resources are available to you 24/7, both for use at the university and at home.

You will have access to our Careers Service, including CV checking, mock interviews and advice on setting up your own business.

Masters project

You will initiate, plan and carry out a project of strategic importance to your organisation. The design and interpretation of the project should draw on a sound knowledge of strategic and change management disciplines.

The project will prepare you for new and challenging situations of strategic relevance to your organisation. It will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to initiate and lead new developments, Additionally, it will enhance your ability to comprehend and integrate cross functional and sectoral issues, while drawing on sound judgement, personal responsibility and initiative in complex and unpredictable public service environments.

You will be allocated a supervisor to guide you through the project.

Entry Requirements

At least three years management or professional experience, plus a degree or equivalent professional qualification. Those with at least five years management or professional experience do not need a degree or equivalent qualification. For non-native speakers of EnglishIELTS 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in the written test and a minimum of 5.5 in the other elements.
