Course content

Develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to promote and protect public health and wellbeing. You will be equipped to fulfil a variety of roles in health promotion and public health, working in local authorities, health services or the voluntary sector.

Focus on how people and communities can empower themselves to improve their health, and how public policy can create healthier societies and places. You will also investigate the psychology of behaviour change, together with how people learn about health. The research strand will enable you to critically appraise evidence and develop research skills.

We have been providing specialist postgraduate health promotion training for more than 40 years, and our courses are up-to-date with all the dynamic and current changes taking place in public health in the UK and globally. This course is recognised by the Institute of Health Promotion and Education.

Mature Applicants

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

You will have the skills to commission, as well as to design, plan, implement and evaluate health promotion interventions. Our students find jobs as health promotion specialists, public health consultants, public health service managers, researchers, lecturers and generally wherever there is a health and wellbeing role at policy, planning and management levels.

Our course is recognised by the Institute of Health Promotion and Education, and our contacts with practitioners in the public health community are well established, both regionally and nationally. We have a track record for our evaluation work, research with communities, commitment to tackling inequalities in health, and in providing an evidence base for practice.

Research Methods for Health & Wellbeing
Gain the theoretical foundation and practical skills required to complete small scale research. You will focus on writing a research proposal, how to conduct research and how to analyse health-related data.

Health Promotion Enquiry
Develop a range of skills underpinning research, evaluation and evidence-based practice, and deepen your awareness of ontological, epistemological and methodological frameworks and how they relate to research.

Research & Practice Development
Your opportunity to undertake a small scale piece of research and/or development that underpins your health-rated practice within nutrition, environmental health or health promotion.

- Library
Our libraries are two of the only university libraries in the UK open 24/7 every day of the year. However you like to study, the libraries have got you covered with group study, silent study, extensive e-learning resources and PC suites.

- Clinical Skills Suite
The £1 million suite has been designed to meet the learning needs of a range of health professionals, with specialist equipment in purpose-built rooms enabling a variety of sessions to be carried out in a suitable and safe environment.
