Why this course?

This course is designed specifically for graduates with both a qualifying law degree and a Diploma in Legal Practice/Professional Legal Practice.

The programme allows you to build on your previous study and focus on a particular area of professional legal practice. The aim is for you to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of that specialism in preparation for a career in law and related fields.

You’ll study

The course is only available full-time on a flexible, distance-learning basis.
You’ll normally receive credit for approved prior learning (from your Diploma studies) which will count towards the LLM.
You’ll complete a compulsory Research Methods module and a 15,000-word dissertation on your chosen area of legal practice.


Our library has a wide range of law reports, legislation, serials and monographs. It also has duplicate sets of key law report series, houses extensive collections in government publications and other related areas.

You’ll have access to a wide range of electronic information sources which can be accessed from home, including all the major legal databases.

Learning & teaching

The Research Methods module is offered entirely on-line.
You have the option of face to face interaction with your dissertation supervisor on campus or can undertake the LLM remotely to suit your particular needs and circumstances. Supervision is provided by highly experienced core staff and legal practitioners with significant expertise in their respective fields.


Assessment is made on the basis of:
- Completion of Legal Research Skills & Methods module
- Completion of 15,000 word dissertation
