Course content

The MEd in Professional Education is a programme of teacher preparation for health and social care professionals.

Course overview

The overarching aim of our Master’s course is to produce competent, independent educators, who are able to develop and deliver professional education across a variety of settings, within an inter-agency context.

This will appeal to educationalists, trainers and expert practitioners, nationally and internationally, working within the independent, private and public sectors.

Why Study Professional Education with us?

This is a well-established course validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Once you have successfully completed an option and two core modules, forming the Postgraduate Certificate (see opposite page), you can apply to become a Fellow of the Academy or a Stage 4 NMC tutor. These recognitions are highly sought after in Higher Education and worth seeking in your role as an educator in practice.

Our education team are experts, not only in teaching and training, but also as pedagogical researchers, publishers and leaders. More importantly we are student-centred; ‘we practice what we teach’.

How will I be taught?

You will experience a variety of learning and teaching methods to promote your personal and professional development and application to practice.

Students generally complete one module per semester, comprising 25 contact hours (200 hours per module in total).

How will I be assessed?

Students will be exposed to a variety of assessment methods designed to ensure that the content, outcomes and level of the modules are measured in a fair and transparent manner. Knowledge and intellectual skills will be assessed through coursework, and students will be asked to demonstrate thinking and cognitive ability through written assignments, portfolios, seminar presentations and reflective accounts. All aspects of the assessment strategy will be used to evaluate transferable/key skills and, where relevant, mapped against national benchmarks.
