Professional Doctorate in Research for Professional Practice
The professional doctorate is designed to meet the needs of senior practitioners, from health and social care backgrounds, who wish to attain the highest level of academic achievement within the context of a structured programme of study.
The programme is of relevance to senior practitioners who are seeking to develop careers as lead researchers within practice rather than academic contexts. Alongside the development of research skills it also aims to develop skills and expertise relevant to supporting a research ethos and culture and will provide the basis from which it will be possible to continue to develop a programme of practice based research.
The programme is designed to develop your research expertise to Doctoral level and equip you to:
• play a significant role in the development and support of a research culture within your practice context,
• lead and inform evaluative practice and
• work effectively and strategically within organisational drivers and agendas.

The emphasis of the programme is therefore not only on the development of research skills but also upon the development of relevant management and leadership expertise

Many of the skills required to study at doctoral level complement the skills required of senior practitioners for example
• the ability to think analytically and critically,
• to work effectively in the context of competing demands between practice, research and management agendas
• to communicate ideas and results effectively to a wide range of audiences.

Emphasis is placed on relating your learning and development to your practice. Many of the assignments are designed to facilitate this process of knowledge transfer and the focus of your research will be on a topic relevant to a specific practice context.

Inter-professional Learning
The focus on developing generic skills means that the programme is of relevance to people working in a wide range of practice contexts. This leads to an inter-professional ethos to the programme which is designed to enhance the learning environment. This is also reflected in the course team which is drawn from across the Faculty of Health all of whom have experience at teaching at a postgraduate level and the majority of whom are involved in the supervision of doctoral students and actively engaged in their own programme of research:

Structure of the Programme
The programme is provided on a part time basis. The taught component, years 1 & 2, requires approximately 15 days attendance per year structured in 2 or 3 day blocks.

The size of the taught modules varies and is made up of the following:
• Reason Rhetoric and Practice
• Research Culture, Ethos and Process
• Management Theory and Practice
• Introduction to Strategic Management
• Change Management
• Meaning and Perspective in Health and Social Care Research
• IT and Statistics for Health

The research component, years 3-5, is supported via tutorials with your supervisory team and attendance at bi-annual 2 day research student conference

A range of assessments are utilised including written assignments, presentations, portfolios, debating and viva. These are designed to enable you to integrate your learning with your practice context and will be structured to help you identify and develop your research project as you progress through the programme.

The Professional Doctorate provides a flexible approach to learning and incorporates the awards of Postgraduate Diploma in Research for Professional Practice and Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Critical Thought for Health Research and Practice.

The course starts in September and prior to admission onto the programme you will be required to take part in an interview with the course leader and relevant members of the course team.
