Course content

In an ever-demanding world market place the need to be competitive in production is essential. Businesses are reorganizing themselves in response to the challenges and demands of the 21st century and must be flexible and responsive to the changing market requirements. Manufacturing companies must produce high quality, cost-effective product in quick response time to customer demand. In order to do this, successful manufacturing companies must embrace the skill and expertise of engineering, business and management.

This course aims to develop production engineers who will be able to apply technology, business and management skills to respond to the demands of the industry for operational excellence.

This is an ideal course for technical students such as mechanical engineers, who wish follow a management career in factory operations and require additional production knowledge.

Graduates of the MSc in Production Engineering and Operations Management have successful progressive careers in the manufacturing industry.

You will have access to the expertise within the Future Manufacturing Applied Research Centre and the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (a collaboration with industry: UNIPART).


On this course you will develop the skills necessary to design and develop lean and competitive manufacturing facilities as well as apply continuous improvement techniques to identify waste. You will learn to identify opportunities for the application of new materials and processes and evaluate appropriate production control system. You will develop the skills to assess manufacturing issues with regards to strategic and financial implications as well as work effectively in a team environment.

On completion of this course you will have developed as a manufacturing engineer and increased your knowledge of the application of technology and developed your business and management skills. You should go on to pursue a successful career in manufacturing industry in roles which typically include manufacturing engineering, process planning, production planning, quality, systems improvement, projects and operations management.
