Course content

The Postgraduate Certificate in Primary English is an innovative and flexible course that caters to the needs of teachers in primary schools and to the developing needs of the schools in which they work . This programme aims to build on excellence in your practice as a primary teacher of English and the skills you need to lead and develop the subject across your whole school. The programme enables you to engage with other professional colleagues and researchers to help you develop critical approaches and strategies for teaching English in a primary context.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Primary English is for qualified teachers who wish to transform their own teaching practice and make an impact on the English teaching and learning within their own school. During the course we focus on areas of the English curriculum such as poetry, drama, use of film and technology as well as key areas such as phonics, grammar and spelling. You will enhance your own subject knowledge in these areas through relating this to effective teaching in the classroom. We support you in your developing role of English subject leader, through exploring strategies of working alongside colleagues using professional strategies such as mentoring and coaching. In this way, the programme encourages you to strengthen your own practice whilst also having a sustainable impact upon your school’s professional development. Through this programme you will attain professional recognition as a primary English specialist teacher, giving you the confidence to teach and lead in this subject.
