Course content

The University of St Mark & St John is one of the most experienced teacher-training institutions in the country. For more than 175 years, our University has played a key role in populating the world with industry-leading, outstanding teaching staff.

Our Primary PGCE course focuses on shaping skills which can make a real difference to pupils the world over. We recognise that teaching is a true vocation and therefore the overarching aim of the Primary PGCE is to prepare the next generation of outstanding teachers by providing training of great breadth and variety.

Trainees taking this PGCE course will benefit not only from high-quality teaching and support within the University, but also from a wide range of partnership schools. Participants will be encouraged to explore the kind of critical thinking that results in a reflective, flexible, caring, confident and knowledgeable approach to teaching.

Of course, work-based learning is an integral part of the PGCE. Trainees will spend 24 weeks in placements at key stages one and two. Additionally, three assignments will allow students to gain 60 credits at master’s level: one third of the 180 credits required for a master’s degree with qualified teacher status (QTS).

Perhaps the most tangible benefit of the PGCE is the extremely high rates of employment following completion of the course: our trainees are sought after locally, nationally and internationally.

-Understanding the child: a personalised approach to children’s learning
-Developing a philosophy of learning & teaching across the primary curriculum
-Final teaching practice
