Photography MA

Course Description

Whether you're a professional photographer or just completed your undergraduate degree, you'll love the chance to take your photography to new heights with our postgraduate programme. We offer a strong creative community that allows for cross discipline approaches, leading to innovative practices and new material technologies. You will not only gain research skills but also an ability to deepen your practice to develop comprehensive photography projects of professional standard.

We will help develop comprehensive communication skills underpinned by academic rigour, creating a robust foundation towards research degree development. Thanks to the exhibition element of our course and links with external organisations, you'll gain concrete experience in the art world and have valuable networking opportunities to help you enjoy a successful career in photography!

Course outline

Our course is 70% practical, giving you the freedom to choose the path you wish to explore within your specific subject area. Based within well-established workshops and studios, you will be taught by a broad range of academic practitioners and supported with highly skilled technicians. You'll work from a wide technical and creative base through theory based research, resolved samples and prototypes culminating in a final practice based MA Project exhibited within the university and externally at a major national venue.

The first practice-based module includes an introduction to the materials, techniques and equipment available within the department. This will support you to create a proposal, which you will explore and develop throughout two further practice-based modules (publication and exhibition). Your practice will be underpinned by theoretical research throughout your MA study.

Our programme works closely within a suite of creative-based MAs, allowing you to collaborate with other students from different disciplines to inspire your work further. We currently have a range of international partnerships working across a range of traditional and digital based 2D programmes.

Graduate destinations

Graduates go on to be successful artists, working as documentary and commercial photographers, gallerists, curators and writers, academics and teachers, and arts organisers of various kinds. Many prefer to support their art practice by combining it with teaching, commercial photography or other related activities.

We encourage you to develop your practice as research or progress through theoretical research to help progress to a practice-led PhD.
