About the course

Unlike other Master programmes in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, the focus in Witten is on the sound academic analysis of real-life problems in an increasingly interconnected world. The challenges facing modern society transcend academic disciplines as well as national boundaries. The problem scenarios we observe today are undisciplined in this sense, and therefore require consistently interdisciplinary approaches. In the highly complex society of the 21st century, it will need people with a generalistic background in economics, politics and philosophy to offer sustainable solutions for the future. The Master PPE in Witten is a tailor-made programme for any career in leading positions at the interface of politics, economics and (civil) society.

Student Profiles

Julian, PPE student at Witten/Herdecke University

"Life is not about ecomics and politics alone. Its challenges and contradictions can’t be solely understood by philosophy either. Grasping world processes rather requires a combination of all. Witten expresses exactly this formula and offers me access from diverse perspectives."

Christian, PPE student at Witten/Herdecke University

"I have chosen the Master of Arts in Philosophy, Politics and Economics after having graduated from business and management degrees in the Netherlands and the UK. These had left me with the feeling that I am still lacking a holistic picture of the world, which is a desire and an expectation I have for the time of my studies. I am convinced that a multidisciplinary study that includes the fields of Philosophy, Politics and Economics is central to understanding how the world operates. My decision for the University of Witten/Herdecke has been the result of thorough research on my side, which also involved going through the challenging application process. Thus far, I have experienced the university as a vibrant, diverse and free-thinking place, for which I have the highest appreciation."

Katharina, PPE student at Witten/Herdecke University

"I studied Oriental Science (international) at Philipps-University Marburg with a major in Politics and Economics of the Near- and Middle East. To deepen my understanding of the interrelations between Politics, Economics and also Philosophy the PPE-Master at Witten/Herdecke University offered a Program with topics that caught my interest immediately.

University Witten/Herdecke provides a unique study atmosphere with small study groups, in depth analysis, strong participation of students into university/PPE-Program matters and a constructive surrounding for personal development. Above that, “studium fundamentale” (STUFU) and a high rate of events, almost every day, make me be aware to be at place where I get to know great personalities and be involved and confronted with interesting topics besides the PPE-Program."

Lea, Alumna PPE - Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (M. A.) at Witten/Herdecke University

"I decided to study the PPE master because the programme trains students to tackle complex problems in politics and economics with philosophical rigour. The design of the programme promotes interdisciplinary thinking so that one's decisions and opinions in one discipline are informed by the other disciplines, no matter whether one is most interested in philosophy, politics or economics.

I chose to study at Witten/Herdecke because it's the only university in Germany that offers this programme. Though the programme was founded fairly recently, it's well planned and organised. The fact that Witten/Herdecke offers seminars instead of lectures is especially important when studying PPE because this leaves more room for discussions about the complex topics and thereby trains argumentative skills and thinking on your feet. Besides the PPE programme itself, Studium Fundamentale is another reason for studying at Witten/Herdecke. Being required to take StuFu courses demonstrates that the University cares about both the accumulation of topic specific knowledge and the development of one's own personality."

Diego, Alumnus PPE at Witten/Herdecke University, Ministry of Social Development Uruguay

"After studying Economics in Uruguay, I was looking for an international master programme that offered the opportunity to broaden my perspective through a multi-disciplinary approach. Witten/Herdecke's PPE MA is all that and more. As an international student in Witten, I found an excellent academic as well as a truly warm and welcoming environment. Having moved from a different continent - and with virtually no
knowledge of the German language - I feel that people here are certainly going out of their way to make me and all of the international students feel welcome. This is an open-minded university, which offers a pluralistic education in an international environment, alongside the Studium Fundamentale as a truly innovative aspect of its curricula. As for everyday life, Witten is a town that is at the same time relaxed and full of activities, both academic and cultural. Many interesting student initiatives and its closeness to Bochum and Dortmund guarantee that a lack of options will never be a problem."
