Course Description

MA Philosophy in Education
The MA Philosophy in Education is aimed specifically at teachers of philosophy in schools, particularly those who deliver, or wish to deliver, the AQA A level in Philosophy. The course combines taught modules carefully focused on topics on the A level syllabus with a module on Teaching Philosophy, which includes a qualification in SAPERE’s Philosophy for children methodology. It is suitable both for those with previous education in philosophy, and those seeking a rigorous introduction.

The programme consists of four taught modules and a dissertation:

Knowledge and Reality examines and evaluates a range of current theories in epistemology and analytic metaphysics. It will provide students with detailed knowledge of the central philosophical themes in these important areas, such as justification, perception, scepticism, realism, causation, persistence through time, freedom, and existence.

Teaching Philosophy provides training on the A level philosophy exam; introduces core logical notions and principles the understanding of which is essential to good philosophical argument; fosters key skills required for both engagement in and
teaching of good philosophical argument and provides training in the Philosophy for Children/Community of Enquiry methodology.

Two options from:
Political Philosophy
Reason and Religion
Logic and Language
Mind and Psychology

Evenings; typically two evenings a week in term-time for a full-time student and one evening for a part-time student.

If you do not complete the full MA, you may qualify for an interim award of a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) or Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip).

A range of bursaries and scholarships are available to help eligible students meet the cost of the tuition fees.

An honours degree (normally 2.1 or above) or equivalent in an appropriate subject

£4,500 (full-time, Home & EU fees), £2,350 (part-time Home & EU fees), £11,500 (full-time International fees)
