The Postgraduate Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine is for those working in a sports clinic environment who want to enhance their employability by developing the skills to critically assess, evaluate and disseminate evidence.

This online course, run with the collaborative partner Diploma MSc, is delivered by an innovative and experienced team who have an established international reputation in sports and exercise medicine. The curriculum is based on the specialist training curriculum developed by the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians. It therefore meets the highest standards for Sports and Exercise Medicine education and will enhance national and international employability. On completion you can progress to the MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine (online delivery).

Modules

  • Anatomy, Physiology and Psychology of Sport and Exercise
  • Exercise and Sport in Relation to Chronic Disease and Populations
  • Common Sports Injuries and Investigation
  • Management and Rehabilitation Planning of Sports and Exercise Related Injuries
  • Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation and Return to Exercise
  • The Multidisciplinary Team in Exercise and Sport

Teaching

At the outset, there is an optional one day residential programme providing an overview of the course and the study skills required at the University’s Glyntaff campus.

Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis). Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who facilitates clinical case discussions with the group and monitors, assesses and marks each student throughout the module.

Assessment

You will be assessed via a range of methods including:

  • Clinical case scenarios, with case-based discussion
  • Individual learning portfolio
  • Group/individual activity
  • Case-based examination

Careers

Postgraduate Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine has been introduced with the purpose of promoting and enhancing professional skills and knowledge among its students which have direct relevance and application to the demands of their working roles. There is increasing competition for employment in the healthcare arena and a need for higher qualifications to assist with career development and support specialisation. It is envisaged that most students will be in primary care or aspiring to such posts.
