Course content

The Primary PGCE is the core programme. It is designed, in collaboration with schools, to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of what it means to be a professional in school in the context of east London, where the skills of educating children in a multicultural, multilingual urban environment are paramount.

Much of your time will be spent in schools, observing learning and teaching, exploring the interface between theory and practice, and working with pupils in a range of classroom settings. You will engage in practical and theoretical study and be encouraged to reflect on and take responsibility for your own professional development. Trainees who complete the programme are highly sought after for employment in local schools. It is not uncommon for trainees to secure employment in
their placement schools.

You will study in a diverse community of students, and be expected to participate, collaborate, and be proactive. Themes such as equal opportunities, multilingualism and meeting the needs of children with special educational needs, underpin the programme.

In addition to gaining confidence and competence across the Primary curriculum, you will select a “route” which will provide you with opportunities to develop enhanced understanding and practice in a particular subject or area

The Humanities and Religious Education (RE) route has been devised to enable trainees to gain an enhanced knowledge and understanding of current thinking in the field of primary RE and Humanities (History, Geography and Citizenship). This route includes specialist workshops from the British Library and opportunities to attend and present at national subject association conferences. The heart of this route is ongoing dialogue and debate (online and face-to-face), exploring key issues in Humanities and RE.

Added value:
Recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Your future career Successful completion of the programme enables you to apply for teaching posts.
