PG Dip Counselling & Psychotherapy


Course Description

The programme is designed to provide an education and training in an integrative approach to psychological counselling and therapy to a level appropriate for safe, ethical and effective practice. It also aims to provide the opportunity for students to enhance and extend further their professional and academic development to postgraduate diploma level.

Topics of study on the diploma include: theory and practice of psychological counselling and therapy, model of integration, alternative models (for example, psychodynamic, person centred, gestalt and cognitive-behavioural); professional and clinical studies – including BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice; practical skills training; social context/multiculturalism; common client presenting problems; client work placement(s); clinical supervision; personal development – including the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and personal therapy.

* an integrative approach that enables students to develop their own synthesis within an integrative framework.
* a long and well established tradition of counsellor training at the university (the programme started in 1972).
* a BACP Accredited programme (one of the first in the country).
* a strong emphasis on the core qualities of counselling and practical skills training – including laboratory work in 6 interview rooms with video recording and playback equipment and full technician support.
* an emphasis on working in groups: counselling practicum, skills training, clinical supervision and peer support groups, and within the whole programme group, on interactive structured exercises and activities.
* a programme staff team with extensive clinical experience, (very) many years experience as trainers; who have written and published widely and who have or still do contribute to the work of BACP committees.
* in a School of Psychology with other staff with relevant expertise, library, book shop and canteen.
* a relatively small programme group of up to 25 students in Years/Modules 1 and 2

UEL Postgraduate Scholarship - 20+ Awards

The UEL Postgraduate Scholarship is a 50% fee waiver on tuition fees. Scholarship is awarded based on an application process, open to applicants who meet the criteria below:Students will only be able to apply for an award if they meet all of the following criteria:
• Have applied for a postgraduate taught masters at UEL starting in September 2016
• Studying full-time or part-time
• Fee assessed as a Home/EU student
• Studying on campus at UELExcludes those studying
• With a collaborative partner
• Via online or distance learning
• A PGCE course
• Professional Diploma in Architecture Part 2 or March Architecture
• Integrated Masters, Professional Doctorates, MPhil, PhD

50 per cent discount on tuition fees

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must have applied for a postgraduate taught course, starting in September 2016, and be studying at one of our campuses.

Part-time fee waiver - 20+ Awards

Students will only be able to apply for an award if they meet all of the following criteria:
• Have applied for a postgraduate taught masters at UEL that starts in September 2016
• Be a part-time postgraduate student (in attendance) studying at least 50% of a full time course
• Be fee assessed as a Home/EU student
• Be classified as ‘home’ for tuition fee purposes and meet standard residency requirements
• Be studying on campus at UELExcludes those studying:
• With a collaborative partner
• Via online or distance learning
• A PGCE course
• Professional Diploma in Architecture Part 2 or March Architecture
• Integrated Masters, Professional Doctorates, MPhil, PhD In addition, MA Social Work students are also not eligible to apply if they are in receipt of government funding.

Eligibility

You must be on a low income (up to £18,200 or £26,000 with a partner) and receiving one of four qualifying benefits. These are: Job Seekers’ Allowance (income based), Income Support, Housing Benefit and New Deal Allowance.

Alumni Scholarship - 20+ Awards

You should previously have been awarded an undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree, professional doctorate or a postgraduate research degree from UEL or one of its predecessor institutions, such as the Polytechnic of East London.
You cannot apply for the alumni discount if your course involves distance learning or if you are studying towards a master’s and diploma in Architecture (RIBA Part 2), a PGCE, a post-compulsory education and training (PCET) course or any short course or courses worth less than 120 credits.

15 per cent discount on tuitions fees

Eligibility

If you’re a member of UEL’s Alumni Association, you are automatically eligible for 15 per cent off your postgraduate fees*. The offer applies to all UEL alumni, however long ago they graduated.

Application Procedure

Please include on your application form that you previously studied at UEL, and include your old student ID number. The 15 per cent discount will be deducted from your tuition fees after any other scholarships, and before any early payment discount is applied. It can also be used alongside other scholarships and funding.

An undergraduate honours degree (or equivalent) in psychology recognised by the BPS (Graduate Basic for Chartership: GBC) with a minimum 2.2 classification (or equivalent).Relevant previous experience in coaching / mentoring and/or the interpersonal skills / potential to benefit from the programmeIn the case of applicants whose first language is not English, then IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) is required. International qualifications will be checked for appropriate matriculation to UK Higher Education postgraduate programmes.
