Course content

Following the Education Act 2011, schools now have the responsibility to provide their students with impartial and independent career guidance. In response to this, schools may need to appoint new staff, or change the responsibilities of their current staff to take on a careers role; these staff will not always have a background in careers work.

The certificate includes the study of relevant terminology (e.g. information, advice, guidance, careers education), the place of careers education in the curriculum, the benefits of impartial career guidance, an introduction to how young people make their career decisions and the process and skills of the career guidance interview.


This course is designed for people who are new to a careers role and who feel they need to learn the foundations of what makes effective careers work in schools. It will enable you to gain a clear understanding of providing careers education and guidance, and give you an opportunity to explore the CEG provision in your own organisation.


Report analysing provision of Careers Education and Guidance (CEG) within an organisation eg a school. Written case study of a young person in transition.

What can I do next?

There is the possibility for progression to Level 7 study eg MA in Career Management.
