Pastoral Theology (MRes)

Course Description

MRes Pastoral Theology
The degree is aimed specifically at students who wish to proceed to research at doctoral level. The MRes Pastoral Theology's special quality is in integrating theory and practice, theology and experience, faith and action. For those already in the thick of practical pastoral work, it presents a framework for reading and study to bring those elements together.

The programme consists of four taught modules and a dissertation:

Foundations of Pastoral Theology aims to establish foundations for pastoral studies by bringing together key theological elements with a reflective approach to Christian ministry. It will introduce a range of issues in methodology for pastoral theology; ecclesiology in pastoral ecclesiology; Christian ministry; theological reflection.

Religion - Contex and Crisis addresses critical issues of the contemporary context from sociological and theological perspectives. It ‘models’ the pastoral theological approach and methodology and deepen understanding of themes of political and liberation theology and the sociology of religion.

Research Skills in Theology will enable students to analyse and critically present the main themes in contemporary theological debate and to develop the broad outlines of a research proposal in Pastoral/Practical Theology.

A range of bursaries and scholarships are available to help eligible students meet the cost of the tuition fees.

Entry Requirements

An honours degree (normally 2.1. or above) in theology or religious studies

Course Fees

£4,500 (full-time, Home & EU fees), £2,350 (part-time Home & EU fees), £11,500 (full-time International fees)
