(Student Profile)

Yasir Jawed

Why did you choose to study your MSc at Surrey and why operations and logistics management?

I was recommended to Surrey by a family friend living in the UK who had been involved in the field of academics for a long time. When I visited, I was impressed by the campus and the town itself.

I am the third generation in my family involved in running a lubricating oil blending plant. I had plans of specialising in supply chain/logistics and the programme of MSc Operations & Logistics Management was the closest thing I came across. I liked the modules being offered and my supervisor at that time (Jonathan Wilson) was an excellent resource.

What is the one thing you would say about Surrey to someone who doesn’t know anything about it?

It’s a beautiful place. The walk from the cathedral down to Twyford Court House J, passing through the School of Music and the football field, was just amazing. My course had some very talented individuals with a vast knowledge base and professional experience, from whom I learnt a lot. This programme was the closest thing to supply chain/operations management and was very useful for me.

What are your top tips for students aspiring to work in your field?

Read a lot, develop a strong knowledge base, become research-oriented, meet/catch up with individuals working in the industry, have fun, but when it comes to business take your programme and course seriously and give it time, because the more time you give the more you will get in return!
