Online Master of Laws (LLM) in Legal Practice

Course Description

Study your LLM online and enhance your legal skills in a specialised practice area

Whether you are a law graduate or qualified lawyer, a Master of Laws (LLM) is an excellent way to develop in-depth knowledge and specialist skills you need to make you stand out in a competitive job market.

In response to the changing legal landscape, we have designed two online Master of Laws programmes:

‌•Online LLM in Legal Practice (Conflict Resolution)

The course will deliver a Masters-level insight into different aspects of the conflict resolution process, combining taught modules on dispute resolution, research methods and related commercial topics with a dissertation on an aspect of conflict resolution of the student's own choice.

‌•Online LLM in Legal Practice (Intellectual Property)

The course will deliver a Masters- level insight into different aspects of intellectual property law, combining taught modules on intellectual property, research methods, and related commercial topics with a dissertation on an aspect of intellectual property law and practice of the student's own choice

Each programme will deliver a Masters-level insight into the different aspects of your chosen specialist area, combining online modules, research methods and related commercial topics. By studying one of our LLM, you will be able to demonstrate your expert specialist knowledge to potential employers through your own dissertation on a specific area of current legal practice.

Current LLM students

The current LLM in International Legal Practice (i-LLM) is still available to book for students who have already started the programme.

If you are a continuing student, please go to “All LLM students” on ELITE to find the booking form, and contact the i-LLM management team if you have any queries.

It is no longer possible to book on to the current i-LLM if you have not yet started this programme.

Please note that if you have started our current i-LLM programme, due to differences in credits and the validation of the awards, you will not be able to book any of the modules from the new LLMs. However, all of the law subject areas covered by the modules in the new LLMs are also covered on the i-LLM.

Why study an LLM?

‌•Broaden your career horizons with a valuable Masters qualification in the specialist fields of conflict resolution or intellectual property
‌•Learn professional skills to make you stand out to potential employers
‌•Gain an up-to-date knowledge of law and practice in this area and the impact of those developments on commercial and legal practice
‌•Online supervision delivered by professionally qualified faculty of legal experts
‌•One-to-one tutor support and feedback on your work from a fully-qualified lawyer
‌•Develop a portfolio demonstrating the law in practice
‌•Study online, giving you the flexibility to fit your studies around other commitments, such as work or family

What core skills will I learn on the course?

Study one of our LLMs and you will gain experience in:

‌•drafting of professional-standard legal and commercial documentation
‌•conducting legal research
‌•legal writing and presenting of research findings
‌•research and reflection on current developments within the law
‌•analysis of the law and application to a range of commercial problems to determine client- focused solutions
‌•development of a portfolio to demonstrate the law in practice

The course will prepare you to advise on a range of scenarios in your chosen field of study:

‌•LLM in Legal Practice (Conflict Resolution): drafting arbitration agreements, the role of Alternative Dispute Resolution and choice of forum in resolving conflict, looking particularly at the resolution of commercial disputes in the international commercial arena

‌•LLM in Legal Practice (Intellectual Property): distinguishing different types of right, registration of rights and enforcement of infringement of rights, looking particularly at issues of intellectual property rights protection and infringement in the international context

What future opportunities will the LLM offer me?

Whether you’re a recent graduate or already work in the conflict resolution or intellectual property sector, this course will assist law graduates in gaining employment in a legal or commercial capacity in your chosen field. If you’re already working within the sector, it can also help you progress into a more senior role.
