Developed in accordance with the IOSH Higher Level Qualification Accreditation Framework this programme focuses on the theory and application of the key principles of health, safety and wellbeing management in an occupational setting.
The programme aims to challenge the preconceptions and practice of participants, as well as developing their knowledge, skills, competencies and ability to reflect and learn from their own professional practice. There is a strong emphasis on students' own practice, and students are encouraged to base their studies on the issues and situations they face in their own field.
The aim of the programme is to develop reflective occupational health, safety and wellbeing practitioners able to understand, develop, implement and monitor both, traditional safety concepts and contemporary health and wellbeing strategies and interventions in the context of the 21st century occupational health environment.

For the Postgraduate Certificate, students must complete the following modules:
• Principles and Practice of Risk Assessment (10 Credits): Examine theoretical and practical approaches to risk assessment, hazard identification and risk control and evaluate their impact on the management of workplace hazards. • Risk Perception & Communication (10 credits): Critically appraise the impact of psychological and psychosocial factors upon the perception and communication of, and response to, a range of risks and threats to health and wellbeing. • Applied Research Methods and Design (20 credits): Develop the qualitative and quantitative research skills necessary to undertake research and evaluate interventions and day-to-day practice • Management of Occupational Health and Wellbeing (20 Credits): Formulate appropriate control strategies and interventions to effectively manage a range of health and wellbeing issues across a variety of environments.
For the Postgraduate Diploma, students undertake the above modules, plus the following core modules:
• Individual & Organisational Change H&S (10 Credits): Appraise factors which influence organisational response to the management and performance of health, safety and wellbeing. • Management of Safety Performance (20 Credits): Identify and appraise proactive and reactive approaches to managing, monitoring, reviewing and auditing safety performance in the workplace. • Reflecting on Professional Development (10 Credits): Reflect on your learning, practice and experiences in order to evidence the development of your professional development. (Typically this module includes an element of work based learning and the completion of two work based projects.) • Developing Health Safety and Wellbeing Strategies & Interventions (20 Credits): Enable students to integrate conceptual frameworks, policies and approaches to intervention through the development of a multidisciplinary intervention on an identified occupational health, safety & wellbeing issue. (Typically this module includes the analysis of live data and information from a collaborating organisation.)
To obtain the MSc, students must also complete a research project (60 credits):
• Research Project (60 credits): Design, plan and undertake a piece of independent applied research, and present the findings.
All of the above modules have been mapped against Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Higher Level Qualification Accreditation Framework 2013.
The programme is assessed by coursework. Examples of assessment tasks include: reports, essays, oral presentations, group work and posters. Assessment tasks encourage students to select specific topics of study that are relevant to them and their practice.
Employability & Careers
Graduate Membership of IOSH
Students who successfully complete the MSc programme will be eligible for Graduate membership of IOSH and will subsequently be able to begin the Initial Professional Development (IPD) stage of their progression to gaining Chartered status.
Improved career and /or academic progression
Students who have completed the MSc at Cardiff Metropolitan University have gained senior management and Director Level positions. Other students have gone on to undertake a PhD or lecture at university.

The programme and MSc award is internationally recognised by government bodies, public and private sector and employers from many countries across the world, including amongst others, Oman, Libya, Lebanon, Nigeria and Germany.
