The course provides the opportunity for those who have studied at undergraduate degree level in a health related subject, to undertake a two year full-time Master's course and upon successful completion receive eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse for mental health.

Being a mental health nurse requires patience and the ability to demonstrate empathy and listening skills, both on a one to one basis and within group settings. You will be provided with the opportunity to develop the intellectual, personal and professional skills required for practice in the mental health field and equips you to manage the very broad and complex range of problems the service users present with, including those with additional long-term physical health problems. This also helps you to provide holistic care to a broad range of service users, including children and young people within community and inpatient settings.

The course provides the opportunity for you to communicate effectively and develop your critical and analytical skills, preparing you to become a competent, caring, compassionate, courageous and committed registered nurse. As a student nurse you will utilise a person-centred approach to facilitate recovery of service users in a range of healthcare settings, including those who are acutely ill, those in rehabilitation services and those experiencing long-term conditions. Through the use of team and collaborative working practices you will also have the chance to learn how to utilise a partnership approach to your care of service users, their carers and family.

The intensive two year course comprises of 50% theory and 50% practice, where you will undertake placements in primary and secondary care settings. This consists of three stages, each comprising of two or three compulsory modules. Throughout the duration of the course you will undertake five theory modules and three theory/practice modules, most of which are shared with students from the other fields of nursing. Your practice will be field specific relating to mental health nursing predominantly and focus is on caring for individuals across the lifespan.
