Regina Holler

“Me and my partner were unsure if we would be able to stay in Denmark long enough to complete my degree. So I looked for an option that allowed me to pursue a degree but also gave me flexibility.

It is great to have flexible studying times that you can fit around all your other tasks. I love that I can be absolutely flexible with my learning while remaining committed to other aspects of my life. I love also how you have access to such a big online library night and day.

Now I will start my Psychology career with this degree. I am so happy that I can change my career and without having to relocate.’’

Kelly Davies

“It was a necessity for me to continue to work while studying for my degree. By studying online at Derby, it allowed me to achieve a degree which otherwise would not have been possible.

I met and became friends with people from all over the world. Together we supported each other throughout our degrees. All the tutors and academic staff were brilliant and responded promptly to any learning enquiries.

I have noticed an improvement in my self-esteem and self-belief. Every time I managed to exceed the grade I thought was possible for me, I realised that I can achieve and the only person who had stopped me from doing so in the past was me. Studying alongside working was difficult to manage at times but has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Ann-Marie Edwards

“I first found my passion for mental health while working in an adult mental health unit in New Zealand. When I decided to study, giving up work to study full time wasn’t an option for me so this part-time online degree was perfect.

I think what really helped was knowing that the tutors were there whenever I needed them. The teaching and learning experience has been excellent. The tutors had in depth-knowledge of the subject, were responsive to questions and offered their feedback and support.

I hit 50 last year and my plan is to continue studying with the University of Derby Online Learning. I want to do a masters and potentially a PhD, so I’ll be studying until I’m 60.”

George Papakyritsis

“Applying for a psychology course was the first step in the process of receiving all the relevant training and qualifications needed to become a practising therapist.

The fact that the Psychology BSc has BPS accreditation was one of the determining factors that made me investigate the course in more detail. Also, the knowledge that I would be assessed via projects, essays, and reports as opposed to exams was a major factor in choosing to apply for it.

The teaching and support staff were always very helpful and seemed to always know the right thing to say in any situation. If I could use one word to describe the course, that word would be ‘journey’. Maybe it’s because I spent seven years on the course as a part-time student. However, I enjoyed every minute of it.”

Joy Rickard

“There was no way I would have been able to give up my current commitments and attend university full time. I realised that online study was the only option that would provide the flexibility that I needed.

I really enjoyed studying online and I think the resources provided are excellent. I can access learning material as and when it’s convenient for me and the forum is used effectively as an interactive space in which discussions and ideas can develop. I’ve also been impressed with the scope of the digital library, both for books and journals, and this is something that I think makes a big difference to the success of the course.

Online study through the University of Derby Online Learning has provided me with a good route to achieving my goals and I also think that it’s good value for money – the perfect combination.”

Sarah Short

Studying online was the perfect opportunity to balance my personal and professional life, without compromising one or the other. The ability to be flexible with study time and material was a big aid, as well as the commitment of staff and support from other online students.

I would have to say the most beneficial experience that I have taken away with me is the enormous support from staff, who are always available to help regardless of how trivial or important the query was.

This course has helped my career in many ways. Firstly, it gave me the background I needed to figure out if this was the correct career path for me and, secondly, it prepared me to further my studies in Psychology.”

Mo Aledeh

'I first came across the university when I was looking for something new, relevant to my work and challenging and UDOL presented all that. I ended up registering for three free MOOC’s [free Massive Open Online Courses].

The teaching and support from the lecturers has been wonderful. They are always there to support students. Discovering UDOL was the best solution to my thirst for studying and continuing development because it offers me the freedom, as well as enabling me to combine work, study, and my private life.'
