Course content

The MSc Professional Accountancy at Dundee is fully accredited by the ACCA. We aim to help you develop the skills and techniques that employers consider vital for entry into a variety of rewarding careers in accounting. It allows you to have a better understanding of accounting practices, regulations and standards in an increasingly globalised accounting and reporting environment.

Why study Professional Accountancy at Dundee?

MSc Professional Accountancy is fully accredited by the ACCA, a full member of the International Federation of Accountants, which operates in countries across the world. Full accreditation means that successful completion of this programme will entitle graduates to claim exemptions from ACCA Fundamental Papers: F1 to F9. Thus, graduates, who may be recruited onto this programme from many different countries, will attain advanced standing into a programme of professional education that will be relevant in many different countries.

What’s so good about Professional Accountancy at Dundee?

The course provides an international perspective on the theory and practice of Professional Accountancy. It is the first UK masters programme to combine Masters level study with full professional body accreditation from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Our staff are committed to providing a stimulating, supportive and friendly environment for our students. This commitment was recognised by the latest National Student Survey (2011) in which 94% of accountancy students said they thought staff were good at explaining things.

How you will be taught

Teaching will involve a mixture of lecture style-delivery, workshops, student presentations, student-led discussion sessions, computer laboratory-based sessions and guest speakers from the accountancy profession and practice.

The learning environment will encourage your participation in your own learning experience in order to nurture independent life-long learning and the development of professional and generic skills.
What you will study

There are five compulsory taught modules:
Audit, Assurance and Professional Ethics
Professional Financial Management
Professional Financial Reporting
Professional Management Accounting
Tax Compliance and Fiscal Studies

Plus a student-led Professional Accountancy Project - this comprises individual student work focused on the accountancy profession and/or practice and will be supervised by School of Business staff. The project includes an extended literature review, which may include company analysis, capturing relevant academic literature, professional accountancy pronouncements, professional publications, the financial press and use of specialist software, as appropriate.

How you will be assessed

Assessment of taught modules will be a mixture of unseen examinations and coursework assignments. To meet ACCA professional body accreditation criteria, each accredited module will incorporate a 3 hour unseen final examination which contributes to at least 50% of the final module grade.

Careers

Successful completion of this course enables student to claim exemption from ACCA Fundamental Papers: F1 to F9. Thus, graduates of this programme will be partly professionally qualified with ACCA and can seek employment in the accountancy profession where they may chose to complete their ACCA professional qualification.

Alternatively, ACCA professional exams can be completed full time with education providers operating in many different countries across the globe.
