Course content

The MSc in Management degree is an intensive, one-year full-time programme that allows business and non-business graduates to acquire the necessary tools and skills to pursue a successful career in the management of business, finance, marketing and human resources.

The programme is delivered by the School of Business who are at the leading edge of accounting, finance and economics developments and the Graduate School of Natural Resources, Law, Policy and Management. The Graduate School covers teaching across the areas of law, policy and management with a focus on energy, water and the mineral resources sector.

Who should study this course?

The programme is intended for graduates from a range of undergraduate degree programs, including, Accountancy, Economics, Administration, Engineering, International Relations, Politics, Mathematics and Humanities, to enable them to acquire the necessary tools and skills to pursue a successful career in the management of business, finance, marketing and human resources.

How you will be taught

Modules are taught using a variety of teaching methods such as lectures, workshops, group-work and student presentations.

What you will study

The programme begins with a two week foundation module to bring all students up to a common minimum standard in management and business statistics. The foundation module also introduces students to important learning resources within the University (e.g. the library and study skills support) and starts the process of encouraging student to work in 'teams' and to see their fellow students as an important learning resource over and above the resources available at the University.

There are six core management modules including a management report that are compulsory for all six pathways. The compulsory core management modules are:

- Foundation Management and Business Statistics
- Performance Measurement and Reporting
- Operations Management and Change
- Human Resource Management
- Marketing Management and Strategy
- Strategic Management and Organisational Analysis
- Project Report (a management report)

How you will be assessed

All modules are assessed through a combination of coursework and final assessment held at the end of each Semester with re-sit opportunity shortly thereafter. Coursework may account for as much as 40-50% of the overall degree. Coursework is an integral part of the assessment process. By forming part of the total mark it encourages students to excel throughout the degree.


Graduates will be equipped with management and leadership skills and knowledge that enhances their employability and contribution to society.

The programme will prepare you to work in small firms, in large multinational firms with offices throughout the world, in the public sector or in international and charitable organisations. The work includes meeting a wide cross-section of different people, and the provision of advice, management and technical services.

You will also have the opportunity to develop important contacts with a large number of fellow students who on leaving the University will progress to important management positions in a wide range of firms and businesses all over the world.
