Course content

The MSc Leadership and Innovation, taught by distance learning, focuses on innovation, collaboration, inter-professional practice, service design and leadership.

Why study Leadership and Innovation at Dundee?

The MSc Leadership and Innovation is an advanced programme of study for professionals, managers and leaders who wish to develop their leadership and innovation knowledge and skills. It sets out to critically examine the relationship between relevant theory, current service design and systems and the context for change and innovation.

You will explore the changing nature of the challenges of professional practice, developing notions of professional and inter-professional leadership as well as the role of design thinking and innovation within this context with respect to 'new public governance.'

This new course is the product of an exciting new partnership between the School of Education, Social Work and Community Education and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.

We offer this programme at Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters Level.

Who should study this course?

Practitioners from a broad range of professions, both nationally and internationally, which include education, health, social services, community learning & development and policing.

This programme understands leadership as being 'at all levels' within organisations. This is for you, if you can think laterally, have a thirst to develop yourself and your organisation and are intrigued by the emerging challenges being faced by professionals locally and globally.

How you will be taught

The course starts in September each year and lasts for 12 months on a full-time basis.
This programme is delivered using flexible distance learning methods through the University Virtual learning Environment with optional workshops when required. This reflects the needs of our students and their employers and makes it attractive to international students.

What you will study

Certificate level:
At Certificate level, or first year if you are continuing onto the Diploma, the focus is on Discovery, and aims to allow you to discover new perspectives on professional roles in public service innovation.

Modules include:

Leadership, Change and Organisational Development (core 30 credits)
Any 2 of the following modules options:

Critical Thinking and Evidence Based Practice (30 Credits)
Inter-Professional Collaboration and Organisational Change (30 credits)
Coaching within a Systemic Context (30 credits)
Negotiated Study (30 credits)

Diploma level

At Diploma level, or second year if you are intending to complete the Masters degree, the focus is on Definition, and you will define new methods and approaches of innovative practices. You also have the opportunity to enter at Diploma level if you already hold a postgraduate certificate in certain disciplines.

Modules include:
Leadership & Design Thinking ( core,30 credits)
Research Methods for Professional Inquiry (core 30 credits)

Masters level:
At Masters level, in the final year, the focus is on Delivery, and this will require you to deliver a personally defined programme of research and/or evaluated practice.

Modules include:
Collaborative Project/Dissertation ( core 60 credits)

How you will be assessed

Summative assessment through assignments.


This pioneering programme fuses the skills of creative thinking with expertise in advanced professional learning and development and is designed to develop and equip professionals with these skills to meet the demands of public, private or voluntary sector particularly when all sectors are under increasing pressure to 'do more with less'. It will help participants apply radical new thinking to find innovative solutions to increasingly complex problems whatever their area of work or expertise.
