QMU has an exceptional reputation in delivering hospitality themed courses and this MSc has been created for those wishing to specialise in this exciting and dynamic sector.
This course focuses on best practice in management, leadership and hospitality while developing an international focus. QMU’s mission is ‘to enhance the wellbeing of individuals and the communities we serve through socially and economically relevant education and research’. The MSc reflects this mission through its underpinning and distinctive identity focusing on contemporary management practice and community engagement and service. It reflects best practice and is led by academic staff who have the experience of leadership roles within the sector, regularly publish and have strong connections to the Institute of Hospitality, the Tourism Society, the Scottish Tourism Alliance, and the Hospitality Industry Trust.
QMU has replaced the traditional dissertation with a student-led project. By designing, leading and reflecting upon a project attached to a community, charity or third sector enterprise, your management and leadership skills will be developed within a hospitality setting.
Our MSc is specifically designed for anyone who is looking to complement their non-business degree and has little or no prior business background. Alternatively, you may have completed to general degree level and be aiming to enhance your qualifications.
Teaching learning and assessment
You will attend lectures and seminars, work in groups and also carry out independent learning. You will be expected to participate in discussions, prepare and develop ideas and engage with experiential learning. Assessment methods will include management reports, essays, web based discussions, reflections on practice, live case studies and group work with presentations. A central part of the course experience is the regular involvement with industry, through specific visits, events, and guest speakers. Class sizes are normally 10-30.
Teaching hours and attendance
Attendance requirements at QMU depend on the modules studied and if you are full or part-time. In most instances the taught elements of the full-time course occur on Tuesday, Wednesday (AM) and Thursday. Part-time students have the option to select different modules each year.
Links with industry/professional bodies
QMU is an approved centre for the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the only professional body in the UK dedicated to promoting the highest standards in management and leadership excellence. As an approved centre, we are working towards facilitating CMI professional qualifications within our postgraduate awards. The MSc involves a number of guest lecturers from industry and visits to industry across many sectors.
You will normally complete eight modules. Examples include: Strategy*/ Inspirational Leadership in Hospitality+/ Organisational Behaviour+/ Global Issues and Challenges for Hospitality Managers+/ International Marketing+/ Introduction to Accounting and Finance+/ Contemporary Issues in International Management.+ . You will also complete a project. (45 credits). * 30 credits +15 credits
Graduates completing the course are prepared to lead, manage and operate in the increasingly complex and dynamic international hospitality environment. It is expected that graduates of this new course will progress to senior management and leadership roles.
This is a practical international course focusing on best practice in management, leadership and hospitality.
The student-led real life project element provides an opportunity of practice, while building experience, enhancing confidence and employability.

: This MSc is ideal if you have an honours degree or equivalent in any discipline or if you have an Ordinary degree but can bring additional experience and expertise to the course. We especially welcome students from non-business areas who are looking to move into or expand their knowledge in Business and Management.
